Mishawaka, IN – (RV) Cumberlands men's soccer had another great display of defense in their game against #21 Bethel (IN), however the Patriots found themselves on the losing end. The Pilots were able to find the goal just once, but it was enough for the 1-0 defeat.
For the third straight game, UC found themselves with the most shots compared to their opponent, but unable to convert. The Patriots outshot the Pilots, 5-4, with five different players taking one.
Cumberlands was unable to put any of the shots on frame, but one of their best chances came in the first five minutes of the game.
Shuma Sasaki slotted the ball to
Tommaso Ogliari just outside the six-yard box on the left side. Ogliari fired the shot towards the right corner of the goal, but it sailed just wide of the frame, keeping the game at 0-0.
Ingmar Struck had one save in the game for UC, coming in the first half. His first of the contest came in the 16' with the ball aimed at the bottom left side of the goal. Struck dove to his right and came up with the save to keep it scoreless. It remained 0-0 through the first 45 minutes.
The Pilots were able to convert a goal in the 64
th minute to break up the tie. UC committed a foul just outside the 18-yard box on the left side of the field. A bending ball from the Pilots attacker from the free kick was placed out of the reach of Struck to go in the goal.
The goal was enough to secure the win for BU, 1-0. The Patriots are now 0-2-1 on the season with two more games left on their road trip to start the season.
Next, the Patriots will face West Virginia Tech on Friday, September 2 for a neutral site game at Rio Grande in Rio Grande, OH. The game will kick-off at 4PM ET.
