Cumberlands is Victorious in Home Opener Against Lyon

Williamsburg, KY – In the #20 UC men's soccer team's first game at home, they took on the Lyon Scots and dominated the match from start to finish. Cumberlands won 2-0, recording their third straight victory.

Stephen Appiah continues to pace the offense for the Patriots recording both a goal and an assist in the match. Tiago Duarte scored his first goal of is career, giving the team an insurance goal in the second half.

The shutout is the third of the season for UC and the second for Pablo Vazquez. The backline of Bruno Garcia, Joachim Blomsterberg, Karl-Emil Andersen, and Tommaso Ogliari held the Scots to just seven shots and only three on frame.

Cumberlands found their first goal of the game on just their third shot, coming in the 29th minute of play. The Patriots were on the attack and the ball was played to Storm Hollensted right outside the box. He saw Andersen onrunning down the flank and passed to him. Andersen sent a low cross to Appiah who was making a near post run. The Louisville, KY native placed the ball on his first touch, straight into the net, for the 1-0 UC lead. With the assist to Andersen, it marks his first point as a Patriot.

Just four minutes later and it looked like the Scots may have found an equalizer. They had a cross from the left side into the box and their attacker took the shot on the first touch. He fired away from inside the 6-yard box and Vazquez dove to his right to make the save.

The second half started with more aggressive play from Lyon, who was in their offensive half more often. They recorded a pair of shots in the first two minutes, both of them coming from outside the 18-yard box and handled easily by Vazquez.

The second goal of the game, came after a foul by the Scots, giving UC a dangerous opportunity, they took advantage of in the 67'. Hollensted took the free kick and lobbed the ball to Appiah inside the 18-yard box. Appiah did not have the angle for the shot so he headed it back to Duarte at the top of the box. He took one touch to set up his right foot, before lacing a shot so well struck that the goalkeeper did not move.

Cumberlands kept Lyon at bay the rest of the match to secure the 2-0 win to improve to 3-2-1 on the season. This game marks the last non-conference regular season game for the Patriots. In all six of their games so far, UC has outshot their opponents and has a season shot advantage of 83-49.

UC will be back in action on Thursday, September 22 when they travel to Freed-Hardeman for a 7PM ET kick-off.
