Williamsburg, KY – The #13 UC men's soccer team returned to the UC Soccer Complex for their first home MSC match of the season and faced an undefeated Georgetown team. It was a hard fought, evenly matched game that resulted in a 1-1 tie. The Patriots are now 5-2-2.
The two teams had almost identical stats with three saves each, four shots on goal, and Georgetown with just one more overall shot at nine. The Patriots did have the edge in corner kicks with five compared to the Tigers' three.
Stephen Appiah scored his ninth goal in six games and
Shuma Sasaki provided the assist, marking his third of the season.
The Tigers opened the scoring in the 24
th minute of play. They secured the goal off a cross from the left side of the pitch that the GC attacker trapped and fired to the upper 90 for the no doubter.
Georgetown almost doubled their lead in the 31' from a point-blank range shot. The Tigers worked their way into the box and it caused
Pablo Vazquez to come off his line. The attacker tried to fire the shot past him, but he was up for the task, keeping the Pats within one.
The 1-0 lead for Georgetown only lasted 14 minutes before UC found the equalizer. Sasaki sped down the left side of the pitch and created enough space to fire off a cross into the box. Appiah and Sasaki were on the same page because the cross met Appiah in stride for the one-touch finish into the back of the net.
The second half held the 1-1 tie with only three shots fired on frame by either team. UC did hold GC under their shots (14.3) and goals per game average (2.50). The Patriots' offense was also able to score just the fourth goal against the Tigers this season.
Through the first three MSC games, UC is now 2-0-1 for their best conference start since 2019 when they went 3-0-0.
Cumberlands will stay at home for their next match when they host Shawnee State on Saturday, October 1 for a 12PM ET kick-off.
