Caldwell, Haworth Notch Career High’s as the Patriots Earn Road Win

Wilberforce, OH – The #24 UC women's basketball team had two players record career-high in their 79 -53 win over Wilberforce Thursday night at Gaston F. Lewis Gym.  With the win, the Patriots improve to 16-4 overall and 10-4 in conference play, while the Bulldogs move to 3-15 overall and 0-14 against the MSC.

Channing Lewis led the way with 18 points and nine rebounds in the game, with nine points and five rebounds coming in the opening period.  In addition, Lewis surpassed 400 rebounds for her career with the performance tonight.  Whitney Caldwell netted a career-high 11 points, while Destiny Haworth dished out a career-high five assists to go along with ten points and four rebounds.  Kaylie Monday, Kassie Monday, and Amerah Steele combined for 18 rebounds, 17 points, 11 assists, and five steals. 

 
Cumberlands opened the game on a 7-0 run, including six points in the paint to take the lead four minutes into the first quarter.  On the next Patriot possession Lakin Burke found Haworth for a jumper, before four straight points by Lewis extended the lead to 13-1 with 4:36 left.  UC utilized a 6-0 run later in the quarter to take a 19-8 lead.

Wilberforce scored eight unanswered points to open the second quarter before Kassie Monday converted a layup to make it 21-16 with 6:01 remaining.  Cumberlands added a pair of three's from Haworth coupled with Lewis hitting from long range to take a 32-20 advantage three minutes later.  A minute later Caldwell anchored an 8-0 run with six points, before Steele added a layup in the closing seconds of the half to give Cumberlands a 42-23 edge.

Caldwell's strong performance carried over into the third quarter as she opened the period draining a three, putting her in double figures for the first time as a Patriot. UC sank six straight from the charity stripe to extend the lead to 53-25, three minutes into the third.  Haworth continued to find the open shooting connecting with Kaylie Monday and Burke for on consecutive possession giving the Patriots a 31-point lead.  Wilberforce went on a 12-2 run before Burke  added a layup in the closing seconds giving UC a 64-41 lead.

Brittni Allison netted all five of her points in the fourth quarter as she drained a three pointer to make it 71-48 midway through the period.  Jaiden Cox and Kassie Monday accounted for the Patriots final eight points in the 79-53 final.

The Patriots outrebounded the Bulldogs 52-25 in the game, making it the third time this season UC has grabbed at least 50 boards in a game. 

UC will return to the court Saturday, January 19, when they return home to face top-ranked Thomas More on Randy Vernon Court.  Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. with live video available here.
