Lawrenceville, GA – The third-ranked Patriots women's soccer team netted four goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half to pull away from (RV) Georgia Gwinnett for the 5-2 victory Friday afternoon at the Grizzly Soccer Complex. With the win, UC extends their win streak to seven straight matches and improves to 11-0-2 on the year.
Jayden Boelter led the way with her third multi-goal game of the season, tallying two goals and an assist as she extends her streak of tallying a point in every game this year.
Carola Fontan and
Nicole Araujo both notched three points on the day, while
Kallen Fuller netted her second collegiate goal.
Laura Vogt made six saves in the win.
After a scoreless first half, in which the Patriots outshot Georgia Gwinnett 12-6, Cumberlands wasted no time in the second half. UC worked the ball up the field and found Boelter in the box, who pushed it out wide to Fontan. Fontan slid the ball just inside the far post for a goal 42 seconds into the half to give UC a 1-0 lead. Moments later Araujo began a transition sending the ball forward to Fontan, who passed it out wide to Boelter. Boelter took one dribble before putting a well-placed shot into the left side of the net making it 2-0.
The Patriots kept applying the pressure as a
Noah Paalman shot deflected off the crossbar, while Araujo's shot was saved. In the 56', Araujo got behind the defense and put a well-placed shot just out of the reach of the goalie giving the Patriots a 3-0 advantage. UC tallied two more shots, before Boelter split the defense and netted her second goal of the contest making it 4-0 in the 61'. That goal was the 65
th of her career, tying her with Leslie Allred for most career goals, while her 154 career points moves her into second place in program history.
Georgia Gwinnett looked for an answered putting a pair of shots on frame, however, Vogt was there for the save, preserving the shutout. It looked like the Patriots extended their lead, but a pair of infractions offset the goals. However, UC continued to apply pressure and in the 85' Fuller bent a ball of the corner kick into the net making it 5-0. GGC added two late goals for the 5-2 final.
UC will return to the pitch Wednesday, October 19, when they travel to Lebanon, TN to face #13 Cumberland. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
