Beckley, WV – The #13 Patriots women's basketball team had five players reach double figures as Cumberlands defeated Bryant & Straton 96-49 Friday afternoon at the Hampton Inn Beckley Golden Bear Classic. With the win, UC improves to 2-0 on the season.
Amy Thompson led all scorers with a career-high 18 points on 8-10 shooting, with 14 of those points coming in the third quarter.
Channing Lewis tallied her first double-double of the season notching 10 points and ten rebounds in the game. The ten rebound performances helps Lewis surpass 500 rebounds for her career.
Kassie Monday tallied 11 points and seven assists, while
Kaylie Monday finished with nine points and six steals.
Casey Coleman and
Amerah Steele finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Cumberlands opened the game strong as
Amerah Steele hit a ten-foot jumper with
Kaylie Monday notched a steal and layup to put UC in front 4-0. That duo added six points before a
Kassie Monday layup made it 12-2 midway through the first quarter. UC closed out the period with nine unanswered points to take a 21-6 advantage.
The Patriots went on a 7-0 run that included a three from
Jaiden Cox to open the second quarter and extend their lead to 28-6 with 7:16 remaining.
Lakin Burke netted four straight points to spark a 9-0 UC run that push their lead to 37-8. Later in the half,
Kaedlee Potter converted a layup before
Destiny Haworth found Steele for three-pointer giving the Pats a 44-19 advantage at the break.
Thompson scored five of UC's first seven points in the third quarter as the Patriots extended their lead to 29 points.
Kassie Monday connected with Thompson twice for scores as the Louisville, KY native reached double figures for the first time as a Patriot midway through the quarter. The two teams traded scores over the next couple minutes as
Kylie Fultz converted a free throw for her first collegiate point giving Cumberlands a 67-32 edge heading into the fourth quarter.
Bryant & Stratton opened the final period on a 7-0 run, before Potter and
Brittni Allison hit back-to-back jumpers to make it 71-39. Those buckets sparked ten unanswered points from UC before Coleman drained her first collegiate three-pointer extending the lead to 80-42. All 11 of Coleman's points came in the fourth quarter, while Potter chipped in six points as the Patriots held on for the 96-49 final.
UC finished the game with 26 assists and 15 steals in the win.
The Patriots will return to court Monday, October 30, when they travel to Murfreesboro, TN to face Middle Tennessee in an exhibition. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m.
