Williamsburg, KY – The third-ranked Patriots women's soccer team outshot third-seed Cumberland 20-12 in the match, however, it wasn't enough as Cumberlands fell to Phoenix 2-0 in the MSC Tournament Championship match Friday afternoon at the UC Soccer Complex.
Georgia Martell made six saves in the match, including stopping a Cumberland penalty kick.
Rita Aguye Cots led the way with eight shots in the contest, while
Jayden Boelter tallied five shots.
UC came out strong as
Carola Fontan put a shot on frame 41 seconds into the match, however, it was saved keeping the match scoreless. The Phoenix responded with a shot off the crossbar and a few minutes later netting their first goal off a corner kick to take a 1-0 advantage in the 8'. In the 11' Cumberland earned a penalty kick when Martell dove to her left to make an incredible save, keeping the deficit 1-0. Martell added two more saves before Cumberland added a second goal to extend their lead. UC tallied a pair of shots in the closing seconds but couldn't convert trailing 2-0 at half.
The Patriots came out and outshot the Phoenix 16-4 in the second half. Both goalies made a save in the first ten minutes of the second half keeping the score 2-0. UC notched eight shots over the next ten minutes, however, couldn't find the back of net. The Phoenix kept turning the Patriots away as they held on for the 2-0 final.
Cumberlands will now await the NAIA Tournament announcement which will take place on Monday, November 13.
