Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Patriots Soar Past Eagles for Seventh Straight Win

Williamsburg, KY – Cumberlands Men's Basketball team got their seventh straight win after taking down the Midway University Eagles Tuesday evening. The Pats took advantage of Eagle mistakes scoring 23 points off turnovers, while limiting their own with a season best five turnovers on offense.

UC saw big scoring performances from Anthony Johnson and Jonathan Brown who had 17 each, Johnson's most of the season. Brown also snagged a team-high 8 boards. Tanner Walton tied his career high with 14 points while Matthew Cromer and DJ Jones netted 14 and 11 respectively. Tajahri Cave came off the bench and made his presence known on the defensive side of the floor, forcing multiple turnovers leading to UC points.

The Eagles started the night with a three two minutes into the game. A nice jumper from Brown put the Pats on the board before MU hit another shot to take a 5-2 lead. Both teams went back in forth over the next five minutes as six points straight from Jones made it 10-8 with 14:33 left in the half.

UC went down by six halfway through the half before a pair of big shots from Walton and a nice finish from Cave at the rim gave the Pats their first lead of the night. A triple from Cromer and a basket from Robertas Jonaitis in the paint extended the lead to six with 8:30 to play. The Eagles tacked on a basket the following possession, but Johnson responded with a three and free throw followed by a pair of steals from Cromer leading to a layup and a Brown slam that put the Pats up 30-18. UC outscored MU 11-9 over the final five minutes of the half as Johnson would score the last six points to give Cumberlands a 41-27 lead at the break.

DJ Jones opened up the second half with a three prior to a Midway basket to make it a 15-point game. This sparked a 15-4 Patriots run that saw five Patriots score including seven points from Brown, and a bucket each from Brady Bell, Cromer, Jonaitis, and Jones. UC garnered a 59-33 lead, their largest of the night, with 15:19 on the clock.

UC's lead stayed around 20 for the next four minutes, but the Eagles didn't go away without a fight. An 11-0 run cut their deficit to 12 before a pair of foul shots from Brown put UC back up 14. The next trip down the court Cromer added his third steal of the night and finished the layup in transition with Walton knocking down a three right after to stop the Eagle run and regain control of the game.

Anthony Johnson and tanner Walton combined for 11 points over the final seven minutes of play to ice the game for the Patriots. J.J Ramey knocked down a three for his seventh point of the game and Ryan Davidson showed efficiency off the bench for UC, scoring a pair of layups and a free throw for five points in just two minutes of play. The final horn sounded with Cumberlands taking the victory 93-68.

UC will have a week break before they host Dalton State at home next Tuesday Nov. 21st. Gametime for that matchup is set for 7 PM right back in the O. Wayne Rollins Center where UC looks to go 8-0 for the first time since the 2012-13 season.
