Cumberlands Win First True Road Test of the Season

Saint Mary of the Woods, IN – The Patriots won their 11th straight game Tuesday night at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. UC held off a late Pomeroy run to take the victory 93-87, moving to 11-0 on the season. Five Patriots finished with double-figures in the road win.
 
J.J. Ramey led UC's scorers with 20 points while also attacking the glass with a team-high 8 rebounds. Anthony Johnson added 18 points while Jonathan Brown netted 15. DJ Jones had an impressive performance with 14 pts, 5 reb, and 8 ast with Robertas Jonaitis rounding out the Pats in double figures with 12 points.
 
Brown started the game with a three pointer and a nice assist to Jonaitis off a pick and roll. A Jonaitis layup and slam in transition gave him six points in the opening five minutes of play. Jones got in on the scoring with a layup and a triple to give UC the 14-9 lead with 14 minutes to go in the half. SMWC would go on a 11-5 run over the next four minutes to take a one-point lead. The Patriots responded with eight straight points off layups from Ramey and Jones, and a Johnson block that led to a Jonaitis alley-oop slam.
 
A Pomeroy three halted the run with 7:26 on the clock, but Jonaitis continued his hot first half with a jumper for his tenth point of the contest. Both teams traded baskets before a Matthew Cromer three along with a pair of foul shots and a dunk from Johnson in transition made it 37-32 UC. Cumberlands ended the half on another nice run, outscoring their opponents 15-2 over the remaining 4:50 of play. Tanner Walton knocked down a triple to start the run before four FT's from Johnson and Jones increased the lead to 12. Layups from Ramey, Brown, and Johnson along with two more makes from Jones at the charity stripe ended the half with UC up 52-34.
 
Both teams played solid defense over the first four minutes of the second period as UC still had a commanding 55-39 lead. A Jones steal led to a Brown dunk through a foul to increase the lead to 18. The Pomeroys scored 12 points in row to cut the Pats lead to just eight before another strong finish from Ramey and a foul pushed the lead back to double digits with 12:42 to play. UC did not stop there as Walton and Johnson hit back-to-back triples to make it 67-52.
 
Saint Mary of the Woods clawed their way back to within six points to get the momentum back in their favor. A pair of and-ones from Brown and Ramey evened the momentum before another SMWC push brought it back to 76-70. With 6:24 on the clock UC took a 10-point lead behind another Jones lay in. UC's lead grew to 11 with just over four minutes left in the game.
 
The Pomeroys responded with a layup of their own before both teams went scoreless for two minutes. Two more points from the foul line brought the score to 88-81 before Jones connected with Johnson for another dunk. This gave Jones his eighth assist of the game. The final 40 seconds saw a SMWC three followed by a FT from Brown and a nice finish from Cromer to ice the game for the Patriots. The final horn sounded with the Patriots winning their 11th straight game 93-87.
 
Cumberlands will have over a week until their next game when they take on the University of Rio Grande in Ohio. The game is scheduled for 3 PM on Dec. 9th.
