Saint Mary of the Woods, IN – The #13 UC women's basketball team had four players in double figures and netted at least 20 points in three quarters to pull away from Saint-Mary-of-the-Woods 83-65 Tuesday night. With the win, the Patriots improve to 8-0 on the season.
Amerah Steele led the way for Cumberlands with a team-high 18 points on 7-12 shooting. Laking Burke added 14 points and five rebounds, while
Kaylie Monday finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.
Kassie Monday notched 11 points, nine assists, and five steals as
Destiny Haworth and
Channing Lewis finished with eight points apiece.
UC opened the game with back-to-back buckets from Burke and Steele to take the early 4-0 advantage. The Pomeroy went on an 8-3 run, before Steele netted five straight points to put the Pats in front 12-8 midway through the first quarter. The two teams traded possession over the next few minutes until
Kassie Monday earned a steal and connected with
Joy Kendrick for a three to make it 17-10. Lewis and Monday each added layups in the final minute as UC took a 21-16 lead after the first quarter.
Kaylie Monday opened the second quarter with a three-pointer as Cumberlands extended their lead to 25-16. A minute later Haworth connected with
Kassie Monday for a three before adding a pair of her own to make it 34-21 with 7:02 remaining. The Pomeroys went on a 10-6 run, before
Kassie Monday found Burke, who completed the three-point play to make it 43-32 with 4:20 left. Burke added a three-point to give the Patriots a 47-36 advantage at half.
The two teams traded baskets to open the third quarter until a Steele layup at the 6:26 mark made it 55-44 in favor of UC. Saint-Mary-of-the-Woods went on an 11-2 run spanning four minutes, before
Kassie Monday found
Kaylie Monday four a jumper to give Cumberlands a 59-55 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Patriots scored ten unanswered points in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, including six from Steele, to extend their lead to 69-57 with 6:00 remaining.
Kassie Monday added four straight points before the two teams traded buckets over the next minute. With 2:35 left, Kendrick forced a steal and found
Kaylie Monday in transition for a layup to make it 77-63. UC closed out the game on a 6-2 run for the 83-65 final.
Cumberlands will return to the court on Tuesday, December 5, when they north to face sixth-ranked Marian. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
