Patriots Overcome Tough Road Test Against Grenadiers

Campbellsville, KY – The Patriots move to 3-0 on the season after winning a tough road game against the Indiana University Southeast Grenadiers. UC overcame a late deficit and hit a pair of clutch free throws to take the 76-72 victory.

Jonathan Brown had his best game of the season, scoring 24 points after going a perfect 11-11 from the charity stripe. DJ Jones also had a great game tallying 18 pts, 2 Reb, and 3 Asst, while also knocking down a couple of clutch shots to give the Pats the lead late in the second half. J.J. Ramey also added 12 points off of 3-6 shooting from deep. Robertas Jonaitis dominated the boards, snagging a season-high 15 rebounds to go along with his eight points.

The Grenadiers jumped out to a 9-4 lead over the first five minutes of play. A Brown jumper and Matthew Cromer layup accounted for UC's first points. Brown knocked down three free throws followed by Ramey's first triple of the night, but IUSE responded keeping a five-point lead with just under 13 minutes to play.

Two more free throws from Brown made it a 15-12 game, but the Grenadiers would score on straight possession to take a seven-point advantage. UC looked to the deep ball to get themselves back in it as Ramey and Jones combined for three straight three-pointers on straight offensive possessions. An and-one from Brown gave UC their first lead of the night with 8:48 remaining in the half.

Cromer hit his first three of the game to extend the lead to four before IUSE hit a shot to bring it back down to two. Robertas Jonaitis came in with his first points of the game, hitting a pair of jumpers to give UC a 31-25 advantage. Both sides traded baskets the remaining five minutes, with Brady Bell and Tajahri Cave scoring four points in the final minute thirty to give the pats a 39-36 lead into the half.

IU Southeast came out on a 9-0 run to start the second half to retake their lead. A pair of FT's from Ramey and Brown cut the UC deficit to two with 15:39 remaining. After a couple of Grenadier baskets Jones knocked down a three and made a layup followed by a Bell bucket in transition to even the score at 53.

UC couldn't take the lead as IUSE scored five more. UC responded with eight points of their own off a pair of Jones' layups, two Jonaitis' foul shots, and a fastbreak basket from Brown. IUSE continued to fight back, taking back the lead 65-61 with 5:49 on the clock.

Jonathan Brown got hot at the right time scoring the next eight UC points off a three, three foul shots, and a dunk. This gave the Pats the 69-67 lead with four minutes to play. IUSE answered once again with a three of their own to go up by one. DJ Jones responded with back-to-back buckets and a made FT to put his team back on top 74-72. UC's defense held strong as they made a big stop with five seconds left, forcing a Grenadier foul. Cromer knocked down both bonus FT's and iced the 76-72 win for Cumberlands.

The Patriots will play their final game of the Campbellsville Classic tomorrow at 2 PM ET, taking on the Eagles of Midway University. Live stats will be available here, and video here.
