Williamsburg, KY – The 20
th-ranked Patriots women's basketball team had a double-double from
Kassie Monday and five players in double figures but it wasn't enough as they fell to #3 Campbellsville 93-77 Saturday afternoon on Randy Vernon Court. The Patriots closed out regular season with a 22-6 record and a 16-6 mark in conference play to finish tied for third with Pikeville.
Kassie Monday led the way with 20 points, a career-high 11 assists, four rebounds, and three steals.
Kaylie Monday added 14 points, seven rebounds, and four steals as she moves into fourth all-time for steals in a season with 77.
Destiny Haworth hit four three-pointers en route to finishing with 14 points, while
Amerah Steele chipped in 13 points and two steals.
Channing Lewis closed out senior day with 5 rebounds and four points.
Kassie Monday netted the first four UC points before
Kaylie Monday intercepted a pass and converted a layup to put the Patriots in front 6-3. Lewis and
Victory Fredricks added baskets to extend the lead to 12-8 midway through the opening quarter.
Kassie Monday dished out three straight assists; two to Haworth and one to
Kaylie Monday as part of an 8-0 run to extend the lead to 20-11 with 3:17 remaining. Campbellsville closed out the quarter on an 11-3 run, however Cumberlands held a 23-22 edge after the first quarter.
Just over a minute into the second period, Lewis found Fredricks for a layup while
Kaylie Monday converted a three-point play to make it 30-25 in favor of UC. The action went back-and-forth over the next several minutes of play until
Kassie Monday hit a 10-foot jumper to make it 36-32 with 4:55 remaining. The Tigers went on 9-4 run, over a three-point span, before
Kassie Monday found Steele on the wing for a three-pointer to put UC back in front 43-41 with 42 seconds remaining. Haworth added a triple in the closing seconds of the half giving the Patriots a 46-43 edge at the break.
Campbellsville opened the third quarter on an 11-2 run before
Kassie Monday converted a jumped to cut the deficit to 54-50 with 6:08 remaining. Monday added consecutive jumpers before the Tigers went on as 7-2 run to extend their lead to 63-56 with 1:36 left. UC rallied closing out the period on an 8-4 with six of those points coming from
Kassie Monday to cut the deficit to 67-64.
The Tigers utilized strong shooting to open the fourth quarter with 15 unanswered points, before
Kassie Monday found Steele for a three-pointer to make it 82-67 with 6:18 remaining. The two teams traded baskets before
Kaylie Monday netted five straight making it 87-74 with 2:54 left. Campbellsville closed out the game on a 6-3 run for the 93-77 final.
The Patriots have earned the fourth-seed in the MSC Tournament and will face the winner of Freed-Hardeman vs. Wilberforce in the quarterfinals of the MSC Tournament on Thursday, February 23, in Bowling Green, KY.
