Clarksville, TN - For the second consecutive season the #19 Patriots men's tennis team knocked off NCAA DI Austin Peay, this time in a 4-3 decision as
Juanchi Alcon clinched the match Thursday afternoon. With the win the Patriots move to 3-2 on the season.
Doubles play proved to be a battle with the Governors taking all three matches to secure the early 1-0 lead.
Austin Peay extended their lead to 2-0 as Sota Minami defeated Martin at #2 songles.
Lucas Augotr collected the first win for the Pats by defeating Hogan Stoker in straight sets of 6-2, 6-2 at #6 singles cutting the score to 2-1. The win improves Augotr moves to 5-0 in singles play.
After a hard fought first set,
Mattis Le Montagner evened the score by conquering Giovanni Becchis 7-5, 6-3. The reigning MSC Player of the Week moves on to 4-1 on the year in singles play.
Hung Ju Wu's match at #4 was next to come to a conclusion and giving UC the lead. Wu jumped out to win the first set 6-2 before Javier Torajada flipped the score in the next to force a tiebreaker. The two went back-and-forth before Wu ultimately won the set 6-4 to give UC a 3-2 edge.
Christian de la Fuente Nodado ended up having to play from behind as Tom Bolton took the first set 6-3. De la Fuente outscored Bolton in the second 7-5 to force a third set, in which Bolton won 6-4, thus tying the match at 4-4.
Juanchi Alcon finished out the night with a hard fought win of his own to complete the win and move to 2-0 on the season in singles. Alcon ended up taking both sets from Bodi van Galen 6-4, 6-3 at #6 and clinched the match for the Patriots.
This win over the Governors makes just the third time the Patriots men's tennis team has been able to grab a victory over a NCAA Division I opponent as they have previously defeated APSU last year, and Morehead State back in 2003.
Cumberlands will look to use the momentum from this win to help carry them into next week as they are set to host Huntington on Monday at 1:00 p.m. before the Midway Eagles come to town on Saturday with that matchup beginning at 1:00 p.m.
