Bowling Green, KY - #19 UC men's tennis looked dynamic during their home match against Huntington Monday evening as they swept the Foresters 7-0. With a match clinching straight set win from
Christian de la Fuente Nodado, the Patriots move to 4-2 on the season.
Doubles play proved to be the trendsetter for the rest of the match as UC grabbed their first point playing tandems.
Mattis Le Montagner and
Juanchi Alcon played as the #3 duo and defeated Mateo Ameller and Alejo Bagnera in a convincing way, winning 6-3. Right after their contest came to an end Augustin Agosto and Valentin Mussi defeated Cumberlands #1 pair
Martin Muller and
Hung Ju Wu 6-3 to even the score.
Max Nijssen and
Sjoerd Nijssen took the courts as the #2 doubles and did their part in securing the 1-0 lead in a tough fought 7-5 win. Huntington's Angel Vazquez Rojas and Bauista Rodrigues Aguliar hung around throughout the match, as there was never more than a two-set lead for the Pats. The Foresters, however, never closed that gap as UC kept them at arm's length to gain the first point.
Singles play began better than anyone could have asked, as UC did not drop a single match. Le Montagner got things started at the #1 spot with a straight set win over Alejo Bagnera. The junior only had three points scored against him in singles play as he finished off Bagnera 6-1, 6-2.
Alcon followed suit as he was able to grab a 6-1, 6-3 victory at the 6th spot to give the Patriots a 3-0 lead in the contest. The freshman continued his strong play against Huntington as this makes for his third straight win. After being down by two points, De la Fuente rallied back scoring six unanswered points to defeat Agosto. The second set was a tighter competition as the junior took the set 6-4, to make it 4-0 and clinched the match.
Muller's match at #2 singles was next to come to a conclusion with his results following the ones before. The junior took the first set 6-2. Facundo Hanni Elias fought hard in the second set, coming back from a 4-0 deficit to tie the match 6-6. Muller took the next two points to claim his first singles win of the season.
Lucas Augotr has been unstoppable in singles play and tonight proved that further with a win over Valentin Mussi. The freshman had to play from behind as he dropped the first canto 6-1 before flipping the score in the next to force a decisive third set. He and his Huntington counterpart went back-and-forth knotted up at one win apiece with Augotr able to edge his opponent for the win by a final count of 11-9.
Wu finished out the night with a hard fought win of his own to complete the sweep and move to 4-2 on the season in singles. The junior took both sets 6-4 to help UC break out the brooms once again.
Cumberlands will use this momentum to carry through a busy weekend hosting Midway on Saturday, March 5 at 1:00 p.m. before SCAD-Atlanta and Milligan come to town on Sunday and Monday with both of those matches also at 11:00 a.m.
