Balanced Scoring Leads to Patriots Recording Top-10 Win

Williamsburg, KY – The sixth-ranked UC women's lacrosse team had six players recording multiple goals as the Patriots defeated tenth-ranked Siena Heights 22-1 Friday night at the UC Lacrosse Complex.  With the win, Cumberlands improves to 2-1 on the season, while the Saints move to 0-1.

Bella Ricchiazzi lead the way for the Patriots with six goals, three assists, a career-high five caused turnovers, and four ground balls in the game.  Emma Rittman had a record setting performance as she scooped a program-best 11 ground balls, while her six caused turnovers rank second in program history.  The freshman also added six draw controls and five points in the win.  Anna Lobbezoo and Morgan Tate finished with four points apiece.

A trio of Patriots tallied three points apiece as Koral Hadac scooped five draw controls.  Olivia McCarrell improved to 2-1 on the season after making five saves in the game.
Siena Heights won the opening draw control and fired two shots on the opening possession, one of which was saved by McCarrell.  Ricchiazzi netted the first two goals of the contest, before causing a turnover and scooping the ground ball that led to an Anna Lobbezoo goal putting UC in front 3-0 with 9:25 remaining.  The Patriots sandwiched Lobbezoo's second goal around a pair of free position goals to extend the lead to 6-0.  Both teams traded possession until the final minute of the period when Rittman intercepted a pass, raced up field and put a well-placed shot into the corner of the cage.  Tate won the following draw control and on that possession Ricchiazzi connected with Reegan Hensley for her first goal of the season making it 8-0 after the first quarter.

The two teams traded goals to start the second quarter before Morgan Terpstra and Marisa Helsten each scored to give Cumberlands an 11-1 advantage with 6:39 remaining.  McCarrell added a pair of saves while Terpstra dished out an assist as UC took an 12-1 edge into the break.

Cumberlands made some halftime adjustments as the won nine of ten second half draw controls after Siena Heights went into the break with an 11-3 advantage in that category.  UC also held the Saints without a shot in the second half.  UC added three goals in the first six minutes of the third quarter, all of which were assisted by three different Patriots.  Tate and Ricchiazzi both converted free position goals, before Tate found Aleyah Belton for her fifth goal of the season making it 18-1.  UC added four goals in the fourth quarter highlighted by a goal and an assists from Mia Rask for the 22-1 final.

UC limited Siena Heights to 2-20 on clears and outshot the Saints 44-11 in the game.

The Patriots have return to the field Tuesday, February 28, when they host Ave Maria.  The first draw is set for 2 p.m. with live video available here.
