Williamsburg, KY – The 20
th-ranked UC's women's basketball team outscored Phoenix 49-24 in the second half as
Kaylie Monday notched her second career double-double in the 80-53 win over Cumberland Thursday night on Randy Vernon Court. The win was Cumberlands 20
th win of the season, marking the second straight season that Patriots have clipped the 20 win plateau.
Kaylie Monday grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds to go along with ten points, four assists and four steals.
Kassie Monday netted a team-high 14 points, while tying her season-high with seven rebounds. The sophomore also dished out five assists and notched four steals.
Destiny Haworth continued her sharp shooting draining a trio of three-pointers to finish with 13 points, while
Channing Lewis added 13 points and seven boards.
Kaedlee Potter added ten points and four rebounds off the bench.
Cumberlands opened the game with an 8-0 run, including a pair of three-pointers from Haworth in the first two minutes of play. The two teams traded baskets before
Kassie Monday and
Kaylie Monday each hit from behind the arc putting Cumberlands in front 17-5 with 2:53 remaining. The Phoenix went on a 9-3 run to close out the quarter as the UC had a 20-14 edge.
The Patriots opened the second quarter with
Kaylie Monday grabbing an offensive rebound and on the ensuing possession Lewis found Potter cutting for a layup. Lewis and Potter combined for the next four points to extend the lead to 26-14, with 6:28 left. The Phoenix responded with a 9-2 run, over a three minute span, before
Whitney Caldwell sank a pair from the charity stripe to push it back to a two possession game. Haworth notched her third three-pointer of the game as UC took a 31-29 lead into the break.
Cumberland opened the second half on a 4-2 run to even the score at 33-33 before
Kassie Monday connected with Potter for two straight layups to make it 37-33 with 6:03 left. A minute later
Kassie Monday intercepted a pass as
Kaylie Monday found Lewis in transition for a layup. Lewis,
Kassie Monday, and
Kaylie Monday combined for an 11-0 Patriots run giving the Patriots a 50-35 advantage with 1:40 remaining.
Kassie Monday drained a three-pointer before Potter added a putback as Cumberlands took a 55-37 lead into the fourth quarter.
Steele notched four points to open the fourth quarter and extend the lead to 60-39 with 7:37 remaining. The two teams traded points over the next couple of minutes before
Joy Kendrick put up a layup to make it 66-44.
Kaylie Monday added a steal and a fastbreak layup on the next possession before UC added a pair from the charity stripe to make it 70-44 midway through the quarter.
Casey Coleman and
Brittni Allison combined for seven points as Cumberlands closed out the game on a 10-9 edge for the 80-53 final.
This marks consecutive 20 wins seasons for UC since the 2008-09 and 2009-10 season. The Patriots tallied 16 assists to the Phoenix nine, while finishing with a 13-4 advantage on steals.
Cumberlands returns to the court Saturday, February 11, when they host UT Southern. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. with live video available
