Slow Start to Much to Overcome as Patriots Fall to Warriors

Fort Wayne, IN – The four-ranked UC men's lacrosse team couldn't overcome a five goal first quarter deficit as they fell to second-ranked Indiana Tech 11-6 Tuesday night.  With the win the Warriors improve to 5-2 on the season, while the Patriots move to 6-1.

Tanner Popovich lead the way for UC with two goals and an assist, while Will Rogers dished out three assists.  Dawson Coltran score twice in the game as well.  Gabe Schwaiger notched a team-high four caused turnovers and three ground balls, while Chrystian Coleman scooped six ground balls.  Michael Toohey made 14 saves between the pipes for UC.

Indiana Tech jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first the minutes of play. The score remained that way until midway through the first quarter when Chrystian Coleman forced a turnover and started a transition in which Will Rogers connected with Christian Vanover for a goal to cut the deficit to 2-1.  The Warriors added four unanswered goals to take a 6-1 lead after the opening quarter.

Indiana Tech extended their lead to 7-1 before Taylor Long forced a turnover and on the ensuing possession Tanner Popovich found Dawson Coltran for a goal to make it 7-2 with 10:40 remaining.  Indiana Tech added a man-up goal, before Nick Kava connected with Tanner Popovich for a goal to cut the deficit to 8-3 at halftime.

Both teams came out of the break with strong defensive efforts keeping the offenses at-bay.  The Patriots took four shots, while Michael Toohey made three saves keeping the score at 8-3 heading into the fourth quarter.  Indiana Tech opened the fourth quarter with three straight goals. Four minutes later, Maalek Wilson scooped a ground ball and took it all the way for a goal to make it 11-4.  Coltran and Popovich each recorded a goal in the closing minutes for the 11-6 final.
 
The Patriots will travel to West Point, GA to face the Skyhawks on Saturday, March 18.  The game is set for a 12 p.m. start.
