Williamsburg, KY - The 18th-ranked Cumberlands men's tennis move to 9-2 on the season after a 4-0 win over (RV) Indiana Tech, Tuesday afternoon at the UC Tennis Court.
Mattis Le Montagner clinched the match for the Patriots with a win at #1 singles.
Doubles play began with UC in the lead as the #2 duo of
Max Nijssen and
Sjoerd Nijssen took their match quickly over Anastasis Lavadas and Juan Avellaneda, 6-3. After this, the Warriors evened the score, by defeating the Patriots' top tandem of
Martin Muller and
Hung Ju Wu 6-4.
The deciding match came at the #3 spot where
Mattis Le Montagner and
Juanchi Alcon had to fight for the win. They found themselves in the midst of a battle with Indiana Tech's Jorge Rodriguez and Randy Funez, but UC's dynamic tandem came out victorious. With this, the duo secured the doubles point for Cumberlands with a win at the third spot. The duo scored the first few, before Jorge Rodruiguez and Randy Funez rallied to make it 7-6 forcing a tie breaker, in which the Pats won 7-2. With this, UC grabbed the 1-0 advantage heading into singles matches.
UC made sure not to mess around in singles play with them grabbing a trio of wins to give them their fifth sweep of the season. Wu was the first to finish, making it a 2-0 count in favor of Cumberlands. The Kaohsiung, Taiwan made easy work of his opponent at #5 singles, Andres Pizzamiglio. The two exchanged points in the first set, before Wu overtook it 6-2. In the second set, however, the junior did not drop a single point, winning 6-0. This win improves Wu to 7-2 on the year in singles play.
Christian de La Fuente Nodado was next to finish playing as the #4 singles. Nodado took the first two points swiftly, before Kayan Kargin scored to equalize the match. Following this, Nodado scored four unanswered points to lead the match. In the second canto, the junior exchanged points before coming away with a 7-5 win, giving UC the 3-0 edge.
Cumberlands' top singles player closed out the match in straight sets. Le Montagner took the first point of set one, before falling behind 2-1 to Michel Zobel. After a trade of leads, the Patriots' junior ended up taking the first set 7-5. In the second stanza, the Lorient, France native won in a convincing way, 6-3, giving UC the 4-0 sweep.
Despite three contests going unfinished, there were positives to draw from them as the Patriots found themselves in some tough battles. Both Muller and
Lucas Augotr's matches were called in early. Muller was playing at the number two singles spot, where he was playing from behind before rallying to tie the match 6-6. The Warriors' Avellaneda took the next point just before the match was disrupted, giving him the 7-6 advantage. Augotr played out of the #6 spot against Indiana Tech's Rodriguez. The UC freshman took the first two points of the match before Rodriguez rallied to tie the score. Following a trade of points, the Buenos Aires, Argentina native dropped the first set 6-4.
Killian Surmont made his debut for the Patriots today as the #3 singles player. After dropping the first canto 6-3, Surmont flipped the score in the second to force a decisive third, which was not finished due to the match being called.
With this win, Cumberlands moves to 9-2 on the season, and remain undefeated at home. The Pats will now turn their attention to third-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan, who they are set to face on Thursday, March 16th at 1:00 p.m.
