Williamsburg, KY - The seventh-ranked UC women's tennis team started the month of March on a high note, moving to 4-1 on the season as they defeated the Eagles of Midway University 7-0.
Meiri Okuwaki clenches the match in a straight set win at #1 single.
Doubles play set the tone for the rest of the match as the Patriots dominated in all three doubles matches to take the first point of the match.
Tessa Gray and
Johanna Beckmann played at #3 duo and dispatched of the Eagles' Grace Froedge and Jasmin McClenahan in a convincing way, winning in a complete shutout of 6-0.
The number two duo of
Fan Shiau and
Marina Nagai followed suit, disposing of Ana Larreal and Isabella McKinney 6-1 to secure the doubles point, giving the Pats the 1-0 lead. Cumberlands' number one duo of
Meiri Okuwaki and
Mikaela Fros bested Agustina Olivero and Mara Gullen to claim the sweep in doubles play.
UC opened singles play in a similar fashion as each of the Patriots won in straight sets to seal the victory.
Fan Shiau got things started for UC at the #3 spot in singles play with a win over Isabella McKinney in straight sets of 6-0.
Nagai made it 3-0 after recording a 6-2, 6-0 win over Gullen at #2 singles. Okuwaki clenched the match for the Pats with a win at #1 singles. The sophomore collected a 6-0, 6-3 win over Olivero, extending the lead to 4-0.
UC continued to pour it on from there, winning all three of the final matchups of the day to garner their first home win of the spring season. At #5 singles, Fros controlled the match from the beginning and defeated Froedge in two 6-0 sets making it a 5-0 advantage for UC. Following this, Beckmann also recorded a straight set 6-0, 6-0 win over Wright.
Catherine Rae finished out the afternoon with a win at #4 singles over Froedge and moved to 3-2 on the season in singles. After an exchange of points in the first set, Rae took the first set 6-2, before finishing the match with another 6-2 win in the second set.
Cumberlands will look to use this to drive their next matchup as they are set to host SCAD-Atlanta on Sunday, March 5th at 11 AM.
