Williamsburg, KY – The 18
th-ranked Patriots men's tennis team had to rally twice, including winning back-to-back three set matches to defeat #15 Lindsey Wilson Monday afternoon at the UC Tennis Court. With the win, UC improves to 15-3 overall and a perfect 7-0 in Mid-South Conference play, while the Blue Raiders move to 10-6 overall.
Cumberlands top duo of
Martin Muller and
Hung Ju Wu notched a 6-2 win over Firas Ben Chouikha and Santiago Diaz. Despite the Patriots win at #1 doubles, Lindsey Wilson rallied to take #2 and #3 doubles with 6-3 wins to take the 1-0 lead.
The Blue Raiders quickly extended their lead to 2-0 with a win at #1 singles.
Mattis Le Montagner put the Patriots on the board with a 6-1, 6-1 win at #2 doubles to cut the deficit to 2-1. This is where play was halted on Saturday due to inclement weather.
When play resumed Monday afternoon
Killian Surmont evened the score at 2-2 with a straight set win at #4 singles. Surmont defeated Ilyas Kouchairi 6-3, 6-3 to extend his win streak to six straight matches.
It was a back-and-forth battle at #3 singles as Christian de La Fuente face 48
th-ranked Tiago Almeida. Almeida won the first set 6-4, however de La Fuente rallied in the second 6-3 to force a third set. The two players traded points throughout the third set until the set was tied at 6-6. De La Fuente jumped out the early lead in the tie-breaker and had three match points but couldn't put it away as Almeida won 10-8 to give Lindsey Wilson a 3-2 lead.
Wu dropped his first set 6-3 to Santiago Diaz in the first set, however, rallied to win the second set 6-2. The junior continued his strong play in the third set as he jumped out to a 5-2 lead. After Diaz scored two straight points, Wu closed out the match taking the set 6-4 to even the score at 3-3.
At #6 singles
Lucas Augotr overcame a slow start as he dropped the first set 6-1 to win the second set 6-1. In the third set Augotr and Lucas Marques traded points until the set was even at 4-4. From that point Augotr earned back-to-back points to win the set 6-4 and clinch the match for the Patriots.
The win is Cumberlands first win over the Blue Raiders at home in nearly two decades and just the second win over Lindsey Wilson in the last decade.
Cumberlands will return to the court on Wednesday, April 12, when they host Shawnee State in a makeup match. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
