Patriots Women’s Tennis Use Four Point Run to Take Down #11 Lindsey Wilson

Williamsburg, KY – The ninth-ranked UC women's tennis team scored four straight points, including three consecutive to opened the resumed match, to knock off 11th-ranked Lindsey Wilson 5-2 Monday afternoon at the UC Tennis Court.  The match was resumed from the point of postponed on Saturday and the win improves the Patriots to 15-1 on the year and 7-0 in conference play.

UC came out strong winning all three doubles matches to score the first point of the match.  Marina Nagai and Fan Shiau notched the first win of the day with a 6-4 win at #2 doubles.  21st-ranked Meiri Okuwaki and Mikaela Fros improve to 12-3 on the season with a 6-3 win over Invanchenko and Rachdanone at #1 doubles to secure the doubles point.  At #3 doubles, Laura Prieto and Catherine Rae traded points early in the match and took the final two points to win 7-5 and complete the sweep.

The Blue Raiders evened the score at 1-1 with a straight sets win at #3 singles.  Prieto dropped her first set at #2 doubles, however, rallied in the second set with a 6-1 win to force a third set.  The sophomore downed Salome Sposetti 6-0 in the third set to put UC in front 2-1.

Reshma Challarapu jumped out to a 5-1 lead on Okuwaki and won the first set 6-4 at #1 singles.  The sophomore rallied to win the second set 6-0 and was leading 2-0 in the third set when play was halted on Saturday.  Once play resumed Okuwaki closed out the set for a 6-2 win to give UC a 3-1 lead. 

Fros clinched the match for Cumberlands with a 6-4, 6-2 win at #5 singles over Ivachenko to make it 4-1.  Shiau rallied from down 4-1 in the first set to take the set 6-4 at #4 singles.  The Taichung, Taiwan native continued carried that momentum into the second set as she won 6-2 to give UC the 5-1 advantage.  Lindsey Wilson won #6 singles for the 5-2 final.

The win extends UC's win streak to 12 straight matches and it was the Patriots ninth win over a NAIA team that is ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA Coaches' Poll.
Cumberlands will return to the court on Wednesday, April 12, when they host Shawnee State in a makeup match.  First serve is set for 1 p.m.
