Williamsburg, KY – The ninth-ranked UC women's tennis team saw their seniors shine as they notched their third consecutive sweep this one a 7-0 win over Pikeville in their regular season finale Saturday afternoon at the UC Tennis Courts. With the win the Patriots clinch the Mid-South Conference regular season championships for the second time in the last three years after finishing a perfect 9-0 in conference play.
Prior to the match, UC honored its 2023 senior class and those five senior made significant contributions to the Patriots win today.
After earning a forfeit at #3 doubles to give UC the advantage seniors Johnna Beckamnn and
Tessa Gray notched a 6-0 win at #1 doubles to earn the Patriots the 1-0 lead. The duo improve to 5-5 on the season, including a 3-1 mark in conference play. At #2 doubles, seniors
Pin-Han Liu and
Satsuki Mitani paired together to face Gabi Guacanes and Genesis Medina. The two tandems traded points back-and-forth until the match was tied at 4-4. From that point Liu and Mitani won the next two games to win the match 6-4. For Liu, it was her first win as a Patriot and Matani's first doubles win this season.
Cumberlands continued their dominance in singles play as they swept all six matches. Beckmann quickly extended the lead to 2-0 after earning a forfeit win at #6 singles.
Meiri Okuwaki followed with a 6-0, 6-0 win at #1 doubles to improve to 18-1 on the season, including winning her last 15 straight matches.
Marina Nagai clinched the match for UC as she blanked her opponent 6-0, 6-0. It was the fourth time this season that the freshman swept her opponent.
At #2 singles,
Laura Prieto defeated Genesis Medina 6-2, 6-4 to make it 5-0. Senior
Mikaela Fros tallied her 16
th consecutive win with a 6-1, 6-1 win at #5 singles. Fros posted a perfect 9-0 record in conference matches and improved to 17-1 overall.
Fan Shiau closed out the match with a straight sets win 6-0, 6-1 over Kathi Steib at #4 singles.
It is the Patriots third Mid-South Conference regular season title in program history. UC has earned the top-seed in the MSC Tournament and will have a first round bye. The MSC Tournament is scheduled for next weekend in Bowling Green, KY.
