First Place Finish at MSC Spring Tournament Makes UC Regular Season Co-Champions

- The eighth-ranked Cumberlands women's golf team finished out the regular season strong as they earned the top-four spots in the individual standing as the Patriots pulled away from the field to win the Mid-South Conference Spring Tournament, Tuesday afternoon at Bear Trace. Cumberlands had a combined score of 928(+52) after three rounds of golf across two days to finish atop the leaderboard by 26 strokes.  With a second-place finish in the MSC fall invite and a first place finish this afternoon, the team closes out the regular season as the Mid-South Conference Co-Champions.

UC had the top four players in the individual standings led by Sharon Holzcer, who earned Medalist honors.  A trio of Patriots finished one stroke back as Ginevra Capo, Viviane Braun, and Emily Allen finished in a three-way tie for second place.  

Sharon Holzcer opened the tournament with a score of 79(+6) in the first round and opened the day in third place. The sophomore carded a two-over-par, 75, in the final round to climb up to the top spot on the leaderboard.  Holzcer began the day with a birdie on her first hole and was one-under-par through the turn to propel her up the leaderboard.  Over the 54-hole tournament, the Venezuelan native notched seven birdies to earn Medalist honors for the first time as a Patriot.  

Capo, Braun, and Allen, who played as an individual, finished just one stroke behind Holzcer in a tie for second place. Capo entered the day off her best round off carding a 72 (-1), which was marked her first round under par for the season. In the final round, the freshman sank three straight birdies on the back nine and closed out the back-nine with a one-under-par, 36, en route to carding a 78 (+5) on the day.  Capo notched a 230 (+11) over the 54-hole tournament.  

Braun tallied one birdie and 14 pars in her final round to close out the tournament with a 75 (+2).  The graduate student birdied her second hole of the day, marking her fourth birdie of the tournament, as she climbed two spots in the individual standings for the runner-up finish.  That was her second highest finish of the season.

Allen, who was competing as an individual, climbed four spots in the individual standings after caring the lowest round of the day with a 74(+1).  Allen opened the day with a birdie on hole 11 and was one-over-par through nine holes.  The Shelbyville, KY native continued her strong play throughout the round and ended with consecutive birdies to help her climb four spots in the individual standings.  Allen finished the tournament carding a 74 (+1) twice as she sank nine birdies during the tournament to help elvate her to her highest individual finish of the season.  

Rounding out the team score for UC was Elena Hortian, who ended the tournament in a tie for 11th place with a combined score of 241(+22). She opened up the tournament with a 79(+6) where she notched 14 pars.  Hortian notched two birdies and nine pars in the final round as she finished with an 80 (+7).  

Competing as an individual, Jordan Comer posted a 28th place finish at the tournament.  She saved her best round for last as she tallied an 80 (+7), including closing out the round with an eagle and birdie to close out the 54-hole tournament with a combined score of 256(+36).

The Patriots finished the regular season tied with Cumberland for the MSC regular season championships.  UC will turn their attention to the MSC Tournament Championships on May 8th and 9th in Bowling Green, KY.
