Williamsburg, KY – Senior
Christian Vanover notched a career-high seven goals and ten points to lead the sixth-ranked UC men's lacrosse team to 19-9 win in the quarterfinals of the AAC Tournament Friday night at the UC Lacrosse Complex. With the win, UC improves to 11-4 on the season and advances to AAC semifinals.
Vanover seven goals came on just eight shots and tied the program, while the 10 points are a Patriots postseason record and ties Ryan Middleton for second in program history.
Will Rogers notched seven points tallying three goals and four assists, while
Dawson Coltran and
Dom Lulow finished with four points each.
Defensively,
Michael Toohey made eight saves between the pipes to earn his 11
th win of the season. Rogers and Toohey finished tied for the team lead with five ground balls apiece, while a trio of Patriots scooped four ground balls.
UC jumped out to the early advantage as Lulow connected with Vanover twice to give the Patriots a 3-0 lead. The Patriots won the ensuing faceoff and utilized three quick passes as Rogers found
Chrystian Coleman cutting towards the cage for a goal to make it 4-0 with 6:21 left. After the teams traded goals, Toohey forced a turnover as the Patriots took a 5-1 lead after the opening quarter.
Three minutes into the second quarter
Taylor Long forced a Bulldogs turnover and on the ensuing possession Coltran found Lulow in the middle of the field for a goal giving UC a 6-1 edge. Cumberlands defense continued to hound the Bulldogs forcing several turnovers as the Patriots extended their lead to 8-1 midway through the period. Tennessee Wesleyan netted three of the next four goals to cut the lead to 9-4 at the break.
The Patriots opened the third quarter with three unanswered goals in just over ten minutes of action. After UC made it 10-4,
Jacob Bush scooped a ground ball off a Toohey save and in the transition
Will Rogers found
Chandler Muth for his first collegiate goal at the 9:24 mark. The score remained that way until the 4:46 mark, when Vanover fired a shot just under the crossbar for his sixth point of the day and his 200
th career point, making him the second Patriot to reach that plateau.
UC made it 14-6 five minutes into the fourth quarter behind transition goals from Vanover and Rogers. A minute later
Evan Barton found Coltran for a goal to give him a multi-goal game. Vanover, the Cincinnati, OH native was involved in the Patriots next three goals with two goals and an assist before Coltran completed his hattrick for the 19-9 final.
Cumberlands advanced to the semifinals of the AAC tournament where they will face top-seed Reinhardt on Friday, April 28. The game is slated for 12 p.m.
