Strong Singles Play Propel Patriots to MSC Championship Match

Bowling Green, KY – The 12th-ranked and top-seed UC men's tennis team won four straight singles matches to defeat fifth-seed Pikeville 4-1 in the semifinals of the Mid-South Conference Tournament Saturday afternoon at the Warren County Tennis and Sports Facility. With the win, the Patriots improve to 20-3 on the season and advance to the MSC finals for the seventh time in program history.

Cumberlands took the advantage in doubles as Mattis Le Montagner and Quentin Villetorte defeated Martin Lorenzo and Alfonso Robinson 6-3 at 1 doubles.  Pikeville evened the doubles point with at win at #3 doubles. At #2 doubles, Martin Muller and Hung Ju Wu battled Juan Diego Alzate and Mirko Dedich.  The match went back-and-forth with the two pairs trading points until the set was tied at 6-6, before the Bears won the tiebreaker 7-5 to give Pikeville the 1-0 lead.

Cumberlands rallied in singles play rattling off four straight wins.  Killian Surmont tied the match at 1-1 after he defeated Martin Lorenzo 6-0, 6-2 at #4 singles.  Mattis Le Montagner followed with a straight set win over Valentin Ortiz.  The junior pulled away for a 6-1, 6-4 victory at #1 singles.

Wu extended his win streak to five straight matches after defeating Alfonso Robinson 6-2, 6-3 at #5 singles to give UC a 3-1 advantage.  With the win, Wu improves to 15-4 on the season.

For the third time in just over a week, Lucas Augotr recorded the clinching point in a Patriots win.  The freshman defeated Mirko Dedich 7-5, 6-4 at #6 singles to make it 4-1 and close out the match.

Christian de La Fuente Nodado won his first set at #3 singles and was playing in a third set play was halted.    

UC will face the winner of Cumberland and Lindsey Wilson in the championship match.  First serve is set for 4 p.m. ET.
