Pats Secure MSC Tournament Title for the 10th Time in Eleven Years

Bowling Green, KY- The 8th-ranked Cumberlands women's golf team secured a first-place finish at the Mid-South Conference Championships Tuesday afternoon, with four Patriots finishing in the top-10 individual standings, led by Maria Neira, who garnered Medalist honors. UC finished the tournament with a three-round, combined score of 901 (+37) which was 27 strokes ahead of second place finisher, Lindsey Wilson.

After opening the tournament with a 77(+5) in round one, sophomore Maria Neira continued to impress throughout the remainder of the tournament. She finished the second round with a 72 (E), notching two birdies and 14 pars. However, her best performance came during the final round of the competition when she garnered a 71(-1). Neria finished the tournament with a combined, three-round score of 218(+2) to earn medalist honors for the first time this season.

Sharon Holczer rode the coattail of her teammate and finished the tournament in third place. Holzcer garnered an overall score of 224(+8) across the 54-hole tournament. The junior recently won first place at the MSC Spring Tournament and continued her success in the MSC Championships. Her best score came in the final round, when she carded a 72 (E) with four birdies.

Emily Allen and Ginevra Capo rounded out the team score for the Patriots. Allen finished the tournament in fourth place with scores of 75 (+3), 76 (+4) and 75 (+3) across three rounds. She notched three birdies during the championship and one eagle in the third round. Capo earned herself a share of ninth place to help lead the team to a first place finish. The freshman garnered a score of 78 (+5) in each of her three rounds, respectively, with three birdies and an eagle on the second hole in the final round.

UC finished 27 strokes ahead of second place Lindsey Wilson, and 50 strokes ahead of Cumberland University, who ended up in third place. This is the tenth time in the last 11 years that the Cumberlands women's golf team has brought home a first place victory at the Mid-South Conference Championships. As first place finishers and a top-10 spot in the last NAIA Coaches' Poll, UC has received an automatic bid and will be playing in the NAIA National Tournament later this month.
