Williamsburg, KY – The freshman duo of
Kara Gipson and
Savanah Jolly each recorded career high's to lead the Patriots to a 3-1 (25-13, 20-25, 25-20, 25-20) win over Lindsey Wilson Friday night in the UC Volleyball Gym. With the win, Cumberlands improves to 12-7 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
"I'm really proud of how played as a unit tonight and I'm especially proud of how our freshman stepped up in such a big way," said Head Coach
Kathryn Park. "Our goal is to get just a little better each match and we definitely saw the improvement tonight."
Gipson paced the Patriots with 18 kills and six blocks, while Jolly notched a double-double with 44 assists and 15 digs.
Allyson Grava and
Sara Zampedri each notched a double-double as the duo combined for 23 kills and 21 digs, while
Juliet Banks notched a team-high 18 digs in the win.
The two teams traded points to open the first set before a kill from Gipson sparked a four-point run putting UC in front 6-2. Jolly dished out assists to Grava, Zampedri, and
Danielle Jackson as Cumberlands took a 9-6 edge. An 8-2 UC run, that included a trio of kills for Gipson extended their lead to 18-10. The Patriots closed out the set on a 6-1 run to take the first set 25-13 and the 1-0 lead.
Lindsey Wilson took the second set 25-20 to even the score, however Cumberlands rallied in the third set. After the Blue Raiders jumped out to a 3-0 lead, Jolly tallied an assist and a pair of aces to even the score at 3-3. UC's second three-point run, which was capped off with a kill from Grava put the Pats in front 6-5. The set was tied seven times before Gipson recorded back-to-back kills to give UC a 16-12 edge. After Lindsey Wilson went a 7-1 run to take the lead, a kill by Gipson sparked a seven-point rally for UC to take a 24-20 lead. Grava capped off the set with a kill to give UC a 2-1 advantage.
Gipson tallied a block and two kills as Cumberlands jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the fourth set. Grava and Zampedri combined for UC's next five kills before
Anna Blumeier put a well-placed ball in play to give UC a 10-6 edge. The Blue Raiders battled back to take a 15-14 lead and after the match was tied at 16-16, Jolly notched an assists, a kill, and an ace to put UC in front 19-16. The Patriots added a five-point run, which was capped off with a kill from Blumeier to take a 24-17 lead. A couple plays later, Gipson recorded her sixth block of the night to closed out the set 25-20 and clinch the match.
The win was UC's first win over Lindsey Wilson since September 1, 2015.
Cumberlands hits the road next weekend for a three-match swing through the Volunteer State. UC opens the road trip with Cumberland on Friday, September 29, with the first serve set for 7 p.m.
