UC Tames (RV) Tigers to Win Conference Opener 5-2

Williamsburg, KY – Eight different Patriots players tallied points as Cumberlands opened Mid-South Conference play with a 5-2 win over Campbellsville Saturday night at the UC Soccer Complex.  With the win, UC improves to 7-0-2 on the year, while the Tigers move to 2-5-2 overall.

For the third time this season, Cumberlands netted three first half goals in the win as Abigail Little, Nicole Araujo, and Rita Aguye Cots all found the back of the net.  Carola Fontan finished with five points after recording her second brace of the season and extending her goal streak to four games.  Olaya Blanco, Lucia Gomez, Sarah Hammerstone, and Noah Paalman each recorded an assist in the win.

Campbellsville earned a corner kick two minutes into the match, however, couldn't capitalized keeping the game scoreless.  In the 6', UC earned a free kick as Amy Anderson passed the ball to Gomez, who the pushed the ball upfield to Paalman making a run down the right side.  Paalman took a dribble before crossing it into the box for Little, who netted her second goal of the season to give UC the 1-0 lead.  The Tigers looked for the equalizer but the shot deflected off the cross bar in the 15'.

The score remained 1-0 until the 38' when Fontan played a ball to Araujo, just outside the box.  The freshman made a quick move to get past the keeper and finish the goal to extend the lead to 2-0.  Campbellsville scored in the 41' minute to cut the lead to 2-1, however, the Pats were quick to respond.  Blanco played a freekick over to Hammerstone, who sent a high lob into the box where Aguye Cots headed it just inside the far post for the goal giving Cumberlands a 3-1 edge at half.

UC opened the second half with three shots in the first 12 minute of play, with one on frame that was saved. Campbellsville made a well-placed shot for a goal in the 62' to cut the lead to 3-2.  The Tigers were looking for the equalizer, however Georgia Martell made the save in the 72'. Three minutes later, Campbellsville was whistled for a handball in the box which set up a penalty kick for Fontan and she converted it to make it 4-2 in favor of Cumberlands. The Tigers earned a pair of corner kicks but were turned away by the Patriots defense and in the 83' Araujo played the ball forward to Fontan, who made one move to get around the keeper before putting it home for her second goal of the night.  UC added one more shot on frame as Martell closed out the night with her third save to earn the win.

It was the third straight game that UC has netted at least four goals.

The Patriots will return to the pitch Friday, September 29, when they travel to McKenzie, TN to take on Bethel.  Kick-off is set for 2 p.m.
