Williamsburg, KY – The fourth-ranked Cumberlands women's soccer team scored late before holding on for the 2-2 draw, Monday night at the UC Soccer Complex. The Patriots move to 4-0-1 on the year, while the Pioneers move to 2-1-1.
Jayden Boelter led the way with a goal and an assist, while
Abigail Little netted her first collegiate goal. Araújo earned her second assist on the year.
Laura Vogt made a season-high seven saves as UC had four players record multiple shots in the game.
Cumberlands came out controlling the possession with two shots in the first seven minutes of action. The two teams traded possession over the next 15 minutes of play with both goalies tallying a pair of saves to keep the game scoreless. The score remained tied until the 32' when Boelter intercepted a pass, made two touches to get behind the keeper and put the ball into the back of the net to give UC a 1-0 lead. It was Boelter's fourth goal of the season. MidAmerica Nazarene looked for the equalizer putting a pair of shots on frame, however, Vogt was there to scoop them keeping UC in front at the break.
Vogt thwarted the Pioneers first shot attempt of the second half, keeping the Patriots in front. Cumberlands looked to extend their lead as Boelter got behind the defense, however, a save by Marcelle Thedinga keep it a 1-0 lead. Moments later, the Patriots were whistled for a foul in the box setting up a penalty kick, which MidAmerica Nazarene converted to tie the match at 1-1. UC went on the attack notching six shots and five corner kicks over the next 15 minutes of action. Late in the second half,
Rita Aguye Cots sent a free kick forward, which was headed by Boelter before Araujo crossed the ball to Little. Little put a well-placed goal past the diving keeper and just inside the far post for her first collegiate goal to give UC a 2-1 edge. In the closing minutes of the game the Pioneers earned a corner kick, which they headed in for the equalizer and the 2-2 final.
UC held a 17-14 edge in shots and had a 6-3 advantage on corner kicks in the game.
The Patriots return to the pitch Saturday, September 9, when they travel to Bourbonnais, IL to face 13
th-ranked Missouri Valley. The game is set to begin at 6 p.m.
