Williamsburg, KY – After a scoreless first half, the Patriots had two timely goals to secure a 2-1 victory over the Huntington Foresters, Tuesday night at the UC Soccer Complex. Cumberlands is now 2-1-2 on the season.
Collectively, UC had 15 shots with three being on frame. Salvador Martinez had the most shots with three, one on goal, and one goal, followed by Karl-Emil Andersen with two shots, one on goal, and one goal, rounded out by Jesus Macaya with two shots, one on frame.
The Patriots were aggressive from the start, recording four shots in the first ten minutes of play, but were unable to capitalize. In the 40', a corner kick from Shuma Sasaki came across the box to provide the Pats with an opportunity but went into the half scoreless.
The second half was sparked by a header that missed just wide from Bruno Garcia. The 51st minute saw UC score their first goal of the day with a pass up field from Jesus Macaya to Shuma Sasaki. Sasaki passed the ball across the box to Martinez Salvador to give the Pats a 1-0 lead.
In the 82nd minute, the Foresters saw a set of fresh legs enter the game to assist them with their lone goal of the day to tie the score, 1-1.
UC worked against the clock, but with five minutes remaining a pass back to Andersen from Rodrigo Riveros recaptured the Patriots 2-1 lead. Strong defensive efforts from the Pats kept the Foresters at bay to secure their second win of the 2023 season.
UC will be back in action just four days time, remaining inside the UC Soccer/Lacrosse Complex to face #3 University of Rio Grande. The game is set to kick off at 7 PM ET on Saturday, September 9 in Williamsburg, KY.
