Williamsburg, KY – The UC volleyball team returned home with a dominating performance sweeping Asbury 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 15) Wednesday night at the UC Volleyball Gym. The Patriots improve to 7-6 on the year, while the Eagles move to 2-2.
Kendall Arnold led the way with 32 assists and a season-high 15 digs and three blocks, while
Sara Zampedri tallied a season-high five aces to go along with 10 kills, and six digs.
Allyson Grava and
Kara Gipson each notched nine kills on the night as
Danielle Jackson totaled five kills, five blocks, and four digs.
Asbury jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set however a kill from Jackson closed the gap. After trading points a kill from Grava spark a five-point run and including a pair of kills from Gipson to put Cumberlands in front 9-6. The set was tied four times before Arnold connected with Zampedri to put UC in front 13-12. The Patriots utilized a 6-3 run, capped off by a Grava kill to extend the lead to 18-14. Asbury went on a 7-2 run to take the lead, however, an ace by
Savanah Jolly coupled with a pair of kills from Zampedri to close out the set gave UC the 1-0 lead.
The Eagles scored the first two points of the second set before Zampedri served UC to a 7-2 advantage with three aces during that run. The two teams traded points until
Jayce Braden tallied a kill off an assist from Arnold to make it 10-5. From that point UC utilized a 4-2 run to double-up Asbury at 14-7. A couple points later back-to-back kills from Grava extended UC's lead to 18-11. Gipson also notched a pair of kills, while
Juliet Banks tallied two of her three aces to help close out the set 25-18 and extend the lead to 2-0.
Arnold opened the third set with two assists and a pair of aces to put UC in front 8-5. The Arnold to Gipson connection remained hot as the duo connected twice to extend the lead to 11-7. After Asbury pulled within three Cumberlands went on a 7-2 run that included three kills from three different Patriot players to extend the lead to 18-10. Zampedri served her way through a six point run as Jolly dished out a pair of assists before Grava closed out the set 25-15 with a kill and the 3-0 victory.
The Patriots finished the day tying their season-high with 12 aces and posted a .264 attacking percentage.
Cumberlands will kick off a five-match road trip on Friday, September 8, when they travel to Portsmouth, OH to face Shawnee State. First serve is set for 6 p.m. with live video available
