Williamsburg, KY – (RV) Cumberlands volleyball put on a show in the UC Volleyball Complex with a dominant 3-0 sweep over the Bethel Wildcats (25-9, 25-18, 25-9). The victory stretches UC's win streak to nine and marks their sixth-straight win over Bethel. The Pats improve to 28-3 on the season and 7-2 in Mid-South play.
Allyson Grava and
Sara Zampedri led the Patriots with 11 kills each while
Kara Gipson added nine of her own.
Kendall Arnold finished the night with a team-high 17 assists followed by
Savanah Jolly, who had 13 through the three-set match. Arnold also added a career-high five aces to tie for the team-lead with
Juliet Banks who also served five aces. Defensively, Banks recorded 10 digs while
Davey Slaughter and Zampedri finished with six digs each.
Zampedri started the match with a kill to get the Pats on the board followed by a block from Jolly and Gipson and a Banks ace to give UC the 3-0 lead. Three more kills from Gipson, an Arnold ace and Zampedri's second kill extended the Patriots lead to 8-1 forcing a BU timeout. This did not slow down the Pats as they outscored the Wildcats 12-4 to take a demanding 19-5 lead. This stretch saw Aleksandra Agustyniak lead the way with four kills while
Alana Shiery and Jolly combined for a block. Both teams took turns scoring until back-to-back kills from Gipson and Zampedri gave UC the first-set 25-9.
Bethel jumped out to a 3-2 lead in the second set before three Banks aces put the Pats back on top. UC held a consistent three-point lead until an ace from Zampedri gave Cumberlands the 16-12 advantage. Grava added two kills over the next six points followed by a huge attack from Zampedri kept the Pats lead at four. Another Shiery block and kills from Jolly and Gipson completed the second set, giving UC the 2-0 set lead.
A pair of Zampedri kills and an attacking error from BU gave the Pats a quick 3-0 lead in the third set. Bethel responded with a kill of their own before Cumberlands rattled off 11 straight points for a 14-1 advantage. A Gipson kill started the run along with three aces from Arnold and a pair of kills from Grava. Two more kills out of Grava and an ace from
Ryann Livingston put the Pats just five points away from victory with a 20-5 lead. After kills from Agustyniak and Zampedri put the Patriots within reach of victory, Gipson sealed the match with a solo block to give UC the 25-9 win, marking their 17
th sweep of the season.
Cumberlands will be back in action tomorrow night at 6:30 for senior night against the Freed-Hardeman Lions. UC will honor their seniors after the match.
