Second Seeded Patriots Advance to MSC Championship with 2-0 Victory Over Third Seeded Phoenix

Columbia, KY – The two-seeded Patriots traveled to Columbia, KY to compete in the MSC Semifinals against the three-seeded Phoenix. UC's offensively driven first half saw them net two goals and working tirelessly on defensive through the second half for the 2-0 victory and to advance on to the championship.

Collectively, UC tallied eight shots with five on frame. Salvador Martinez led the way with one goal, four shots with three on frame while Shuma Sasaki had one goal, two shots with one on frame. Rodrigo Riveros and Mario Fernandez Garica each tallied a shot as well.

In the first half, the Phoenix were the first to record a shot but was unsuccessful courtesy of the Patriots strong defensive back line. Fernandez Garcia marked the first shot for the Pats but missed just wide to set Emil Skursch up for the corner kick.

The first shot on frame came from Martinez in the '12, setting him up for a header on frame as well in the 16th minute.

After pressing on the offensive third of the pitch, Martinez sent a pass across the box in the '25 to Sasaki who sent a beautiful header into the back of the goal for a 1-0 Patriot advantage.

Both teams were evenly matched until the '35, UC struck quick with a header from Martinez on a give and go from Riveros. Cumberlands took a 2-0 lead into the half.

In the second half, Riveros was quick with a shot on frame in the 46th minute. The tides quickly turned as the Phoenix started to press on their offensive third of the pitch. The Phoenix recorded a trio of shots in a span of five minutes, but goalkeeper Javiero Izquierdo Cuervo had a strong punch to hold the threat.

Goalkeeper Izquierdo Cuervo recorded a total of six saves with five of them coming in the second half, along with the Patriots back line blocking shots to clinch a spot in the MSC Championship match with their 2-0 victory.

The Patriots will compete in the MSC Championship match on Wednesday, November 13 in Columbia, KY against the winner of No. 1 seed Lindsey Wilson College and No. 4 Campbellsville University. The match is set for 7:00 p.m. (EST).
