Patriots Score Pair of Late Goals to Advance to MSC Finals

Williamsburg, KY – The top-ranked Cumberlands women's soccer team netted two goals in the final ten minutes of action to defeat fourth-seed Bethel 2-0 Monday night at the UC Soccer Complex.  With the win, the Patriots improve to 16-0 overall and advance to the MSC championship match Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Rita Aguye led the way for UC tallying a goal and an assist in the match.  Carola Fontan netted her ninth goal of the season, while Jayden Boelter tallied an assist in the contest.  Georgia Martell finished with two saves as the Patriots recorded their seventh straight clean sheet.

The Patriots came out controlling the possession as Nicole Araujo notched the first shot of the match.  The two teams traded goals before Sarah Hammerstone puts a shot on frame, which was saved in the 21'. Bethel put a shot on frame in the 35' however, Martell was there for the save to  keep the match scoreless.  UC tallied four more shots, three of which were save as the match remained even at the break.

Cumberlands continued to control the possession in the second half notching three shots in the first ten minutes.  In the 69' Fontan took a corner kick, which was headed by Samantha Sokolove just wide right of the goal.  The game remained scoreless until the 71' when Jayden Boelter was fouled in the box setting up a Patriots penalty kick.  Fontan set up and went towards the right post, however, it was saved by Alicia Perez keeping the match scoreless. The Patriots finally broke through in the 82' when Aguye sent a cross into the box for Fontan to finish for her ninth goal of the season and taking the 1-0 lead.  UC tallied two more shots and a corner kick before Boelter passes it to Aguye, who buried a shot just inside the far post to make it 2-0 with 6:30 remaining.  The Wildcats tallied one more shot as Cumberlands closes out for the 2-0 finish.

UC outshot the Wildcats 24-6 and tallied six cornerkicks in the game.

Cumberlands returns to the pitch on Wednesday, November 13,  when they face the winner of the #2 Campbellsville vs. #3 Cumberland.  That match is slated for 6 p.m.
