Pats Collect Two Individual Champions While Placing 10 at Patriot Open

Corbin, KY – The No. 4 Patriots men's wrestling team had an impressive day at the Pepsi Patriot Open on Saturday. UC collected two individual champions while having ten wrestlers place in the top six of their respective weight classes.  

In the 149-weight class, Ty Lehman collected a first-place finish after posting a 5-0 record on the day. Lehman opened the day with a bye through the first round. In his first match of the day, he faced #21 Chase Pluhar (Indiana Tech), where he recorded a 6-3 decision, scoring six points on two takedowns. Lehman went on to face Louden Stradling (Cleary University), where he recorded a 5-4 decision after recording a takedown, an escape, and riding time. He advanced to take on #9 Victor Guzman (Cumberland University) who medically forfeited the match, sending Lehman into the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, Lehman faced #11 Cj Shadinger (Reinhardt University) and recorded a 4-3 decision, scoring on an escape and a takedown. In the Championship match he faced Devin Griffen (Reinhardt University), where Lehman notched the fall at 1:47 to collect the first-place finish.  

12th ranked Dylan Preston went undefeated, 5-0, at the invitational and took home first-place in the 174-weight class. Preston opened the day taking on Griff Bekish (Indiana Tech) which he won by a 7-2 decision, scoring six points on two takedowns and one on an escape. In the second round, he faced Dominico Migliori (Lourdes University) and won by an 11-3 major decision, where he had a 3-point takedown in all three periods. In the quarterfinals, Preston wrestled Alex Drewek (Sienna Heights Univ.) and notched a fall at 1:47. Preston faced his teammate TJ Huber in the semi-final round and won by an 8-5 decision, scoring on two takedowns and two escapes.  The senior went on to win the 174-weight class after #2 Graham Calhoun (Southeastern) forfeited the match.  

Adonis Boyd, ranked tenth in the NAIA, went 5-1 in the 125-weight class and earned the third-place spot. After opening up with a bye, he took on Liam Camp (Reinhardt University) in the second round, where he fell by technical fall (17-0). Boyd bounced back with a fall of 0:38 against Mikey Doerr (Life). He went on to face teammate #14 Matteo Vargo in the next round and moved on due to a medical forfeit. Boyd succeeded in the next round over #15 Jeffrey Bailey (Cornerstone) by fall in a time of 1:10. In the next round, the junior notched another fall at the 3:27 mark over Jamarcus Smith (Unattached) to move on to the third place match. In his final match he took on #18 Anthony Hughes (Marian University) where he recorded his fourth win by fall of the day, this time in 5:20 to garner the third place finish.  

#20 Sherman Dixon went 5-1 on the day and took home third place for the 184-weight class.  After receiving a bye, he fell to Jonathan Vanderbilt (Southeastern) in his first match of the day. Dixon went on to win his next match over Evan Tilton (Marian University) by technical fall (25-9).  In his third match, Dixon notched a fall at 1:43, defeating #15 John Roberts (Southeastern). The senior advanced to the third place match after both #10 Rocco Horvath (Cumberland University) and Jonathan Vanderbilt (Southeastern) medically forfeited their matches. In the third place match, Dixon won by a 14-7 decision with two 3-point takedowns and a 4-point nearfall in the first period to capture the third place finish. 

Malachia Harris finished third in the Freshmen/Sophomore division. He opened the day with a match against Maddox Sisk (Reinhardt University) and defeated him 19-2, resulting ina win by technical fall from four 3-point takedowns, a 3-point nearfall, and two 2-point nearfalls. The freshman then went on to face Jacob Barlow (Cumberland University) and defeated him by major decision of 16-5, highlighted by three 3-point takedowns in the first period. In the third round, Harris took on Dylan McLean (Unattached) and won 18-1, resulting in another technical fall. Harris fell to Dayveon Rupert (Southwestern Michigan) in the semifinal match, but then went on to defeat Justin Krebs (Southeastern) and Carson Freeman (Montevallo) due to medical forfeits to finish the day third.  

In the 165-weight class, tenth ranked O'Brian Black earned third place. Going 6-1 on the day, he started with a bye and fell in his first match to Anthony Federico. In his next match, Black defeated Ethan Gomez (Cumberland University) by a 5-3 decision, marking two 3-point takedowns in the first period. The graduate student moved on to face #23 Eli Clemmons (Cumberland University) where he won by a decision of 5-3, notching a 3-point takedown and two escapes. Black then won by a medical forfeit over #4 Trace Braun to advance. Up next was Jakob Chisolm (Montevallo) where he notched a fall of 1:54. Black would then face Anthony Federico (Southeastern) for the second time of the day, this time securing the win with a forfeit to advance to the third place match.  Black ended the day defeating Nathan Napolitano (Reinhardt University) by a 9-6 decision, tallying two 3-point takedowns, a 2-point reversal, and an escape.  

#23 Chandlar Akins took third place in the 133-weight class. He opened the day with a bye and then defeated Troy Kennedy (Campbellsville) by a decision of 2-0, winning by a reversal in period three. He lost in the next round against Collin Mullins (Unattached). The graduate student moved to take on Alex Tabor (Lindsey Wilson) and he bounced back in a big way, winning 18-1, resulting in a technical fall. Akins moved into the third place match after the match against Ethan Sellers (Life) was ruled a no-contest and an Aaron Lucio (Southeastern) medical forfeit. In his final matchup he took on #16 Nick Rodriguez (Lourdes University), where he notched the win by a 9-6 decision, scoring on two 3-point takedowns, two escapes, and riding time.  

TJ Huber was another third place finisher for the Pats. Huber began his day by recording major decision victories of 9-1 and 13-1 over Jabril Williams (Midway University) and Cameron Nesbit (Cumberland University). In the third match, Huber faced Lenny Feliciano and won by a 5-4 decision, tallying a 3-point takedown and two escapes in the match. Huber then fell to teammate #12 Dylan Preston in the semifinals. Huber followed that with a 6-0 decision over #18 Landon Buchanan and an 11-8 decision over #25 Julius Polk (Rochester University) to finish third.  

Greyson Stevens, ranked 14th in the NAIA, competed in the 197-weight class and earned third place with a 4-1 record. Stevens began the day with a bye before facing off against Dough Dittmer (Life) by a major decision of 14-2, notching three 3-point takedowns, a 4-point nearfall, and an escape. He then went on to defeat Justin Hoffer (Bellarmine) in the third round by a 9-3 decision where he recorded two 3-point takedowns, an escape, and a point for riding time. Stevens fell to Khalil Abdushshakur (Unattached) in the semi-finals. The senior then took on Jeffery Tubbs (Montevallo) where he took the match by an 8-5 decision with two 3-point takedowns and two escapes. To finish the day, Stevens defeated Ryan Krimpelbein (Unattached) by a 13-6 decision to place third.  

Eli Peyton took sixth place in the 141-weight class and finished with a 4-2 record. Peyton took down Ian Boden (Cornerstone) in the opening match with a 7-2 decision, marking two 3-point takedowns and an escape in the win. In the second round, he defeated Shane Watson (Campbellsville) by a 4-2 decision, scoring all four points in the second period on a 3-point takedown and an escape. Peyton fell to Elijah Anthony (Unattached) in round three.  The junior went on to win his next two matches by 4-2 decisions over Nicc Wells (Unattached) and Ian Boden (Cornerstone) before falling to #20 Cole McKinley. Peyton finished the day by falling in the fifth place match to #21 Conner Kimbrough (Indiana Tech) to place sixth.  

UC men's wrestling team will travel to Bristol, TN to compete in the King Open on Sunday, November 17th.
