Huntington, IN – The seventh-ranked Patriot couldn't overcome an early deficit despite a career-high from
Joy Kendrick as they fell to Huntington 90-84 Friday night. With the win the Foresters improve to 2-1, while UC move 4-1.
Kendrick led the way with 23 points and seven rebounds, while
Kaylie Monday notched 17 points and seven rebounds.
Kassie Monday tallied 14 points, seven rebounds, and four assists, while
Jaiden Cox netted a season-high 14 points to go along with five rebounds.
UC won the opening tip and on the possession Kendrick hit a jumper to make it 2-0. Huntington went on a 14-3 run before
Lakin Burke notched a steal and found
Kaylie Monday for a layup in transition. The Patriots tallied baskets from
Payton Acey,
Kaylie Monday and
Kassie Monday, however the Foresters took a 24-12 lead after the first quarter.
The two teams traded baskets over the first three minutes of the second quarter until
Amy Thompson drained a three-pointer off a
Kassie Monday assists to cut the deficit to 31-19. Kasie Monday scored five straight points as part of a 7-0 UC run to pull the Patriots with seven at 33-26 with 4:14 remaining. Both teams traded baskets, before the Foresters closed out the half on a four-point run to make it 46-35 at the break.
Kendrick sandwiched a pair of three-pointers around a
Kassie Monday jumper cutting the deficit to 49-43 four minutes into the third quarter. Thompson and
LeeAnna McNulty each scored in the paint for UC bringing Cumberlands within four two minutes later. Kendrick netted five Patriot points as Huntington went on an 18-5 to extend their lead to 69-52. Cox and Kendrick combined for the final four points of the period bringing UC within 13 at 69-56.
Cumberlands tallied a trio of three-pointers, including a pair from Cox to cut the deficit to 74-68 with 6:11 remaining in the fourth quarter. The trio of
Kaylie Monday, Kendrick and Cox combined for UC's next 12 points in the period bringing Cumberlands within four at 85-81 with 50 seconds left. 30 seconds later, Cox drained her fourth three-pointer of game cutting the deficit to 86-84, however that was the closest UC came as Huntington earned the 90-84 final.
The Patriots return to the court Saturday, November 9
th, when they face IU Southeast on day two of the Huntington Classic. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
