Mayaguez, Puerto Rico – The seven-ranked Patriots utilized stifling second half defense while a pair of players tallied double-doubles in a 61-45 win over Puerto Rico Bayamon Sunday afternoon. With the win, UC improves to 12-1 on the season.
Kaylie Monday and
Joy Kendrick each notched double-doubles in the win. Monday notched 17 points and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds to go along with four steals. Kendrick notched 11 points and 12 rebounds, while
Lakin Burke chipped in 11 points.
Kassie Monday and
Jaiden Cox each tallied nine points and seven rebounds, while
Kassie Monday dished out six assists.
Cumberlands opened the game on a 12-2 run in the first quarter to take an 18-13 lead after the opening period. The Cowboys opened the second quarter with a 10-0 run to take a 23-20 lead midway through the period.
Kaylie Monday drained a three-pointer before earning a steal and finding
Kassie Monday for a layup to put UC back in front. The two teams traded baskets until Kendrick drained a three-pointer in the closing seconds of the half as UC took a 32-28 lead at the break.
The Patriots came out strong in the third quarter opening on an 11-4 run to extend their lead to 43-32. Puerto Rico Bayamon netted four of the next six points cutting the lead to 45-36. Cumberlands carried their strong effort into the fourth quarter extending their lead to 17 points with 3:02 remaining, which is the largest lead of the game. UC closed out the game for the 61-45 final.
UC tallied 19 fast break points and had 11 second chance points in the win.
Cumberlands returns to the court Monday, December 16
th, when they face Puerto Rico Mayaguez. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
