Second Half Rally Not Enough as #1 Patriots Fall in NAIA National Tournament

Pensacola, FL – The top-ranked Cumberlands women's soccer team netted the equalizer in the 65' however it wasn't enough as the Patriots fell to #16 John Brown 2-1 in the Round of 16 at the NAIA National Tournament Monday afternoon.   UC closes out the season with a 19-1 record.

Carola Fontan netted the Patriots lone goal of the match, while Nicole Araujo and Jayden Boelter each tallied an assist on the play.  UC backline of Rita Aguye, Olaya Blanco, Noah Paalman and Samantha Sokolove limited the Eagles to just seven shots in the match.

John Brown put the Patriots on the heels early rattling off four corner kicks in the first ten minutes of play.  Araujo put a shot on frame early in the match, which was saved keeping the match scoreless.  The Patriots earned a pair of corner kicks and as Boelter header went wide of the net in the 16'.  John Brown scored in the 24' to take the 1-0 lead.  Cumberlands looked for the equalizer as Alba Ramriez tallied a shot on frame which was saved as UC notched tallied three more shots, however, the Eagles took the 1-0 lead into the break. 

The Patriots came out strong in the second half as Lucia Gomez and Boelter each recorded a shot in the first ten minutes of the period.  The score remained 1-0 until the 65' when UC pushed the ball forward to Araujo who crossed to Boelter.  Boelter utilized one touch to connect with Fontan for the equalizer and her tenth goal of the season.  Just over minute later, Boelter fired a shot towards the goal, however, the Eagles goalie made a diving save to keep the score tied.  In the 77', John Brown utilized a counter attack as Lauren Walter netted the go-ahead goal giving the Eagles the 2-1 lead.  Cumberlands continued to battle as Noah Paalman and Samantha Sokolove each put a shot of frame but couldn't convert leading to the 2-1 final.

This concludes an incredible season for the Patriots in which they won both the MSC regular season and tournament titles in the same year for the first time in program history.
