Harrogate, TN – The Cumberlands women's tennis team opened the 2024 campaign with a regular season match against NCAA DII foe Lincoln Memorial. The Pats fell 5-2 on Friday against the Railsplitters.
Lincoln Memorial opened the day strong, sweeping doubles play to take an early 1-0 lead.
After the Patriots dropped the first two matches in singles, Fan Shiau earned the first win of the day for UC to cut the deficit to 3-1. The junior earned a solid 6-0, 7-6 victory over Sophia Array at #4 singles.
Freshman Blanca Lopez picked up the only other win on the day for the Pats, earning a tough three-set victory over Carla Ramonet at #3 singles. Lopez won the first set 7-5, before dropping the second set 6-3. The Spain native finished strong in the with a 10-7 win in the third set to secure the victory.
The Railsplitters responded with a win at #3 singles to go up 4-2 and secure the overall victory.
#5 singles proved to be another tough three-set match, with UC's Jirachavala Puckaporn facing off against Mar Garcia Bucosa. Puckaporn won the opening set 6-4, before dropping the second 6-2. Puckaporn ultimately fell in a tightly contested third set, 13-11.
UC is set to compete in the Georgia Gwinnett Open next weekend.
