Patriots Rally Comes Up Short Against #11 Tigers

Georgetown, KY – The #15 UC women's basketball team erased a 12-point second half deficit but it - wasn't enough as they fell late to #11 Georgetown 72-67 Saturday afternoon at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym.  With the win the Tigers move to 22-4 overall and 7-3 in conference play, while the Patriots moved to 18-8 and 6-4 against the MSC.

Kassie Monday led the way for Cumberlands with 22 points, five assists, and three rebounds. With her five assists in the game, Kassie Monday moves into third all-time in career assists. Channing Lewis tallied 13 points and 11 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season, while Kaylie Monday tallied eight points, seven rebounds, and four steals.  Kaylie Monday moves into third on the Patriots career steals record.

Georgetown took a 4-0 lead before Lewis converted a three-point play coupled with a steal and layup from Kaylie Monday made it 5-4, two minutes into the game.  The two teams traded baskets over the next three minutes until a Kassie Monday layup pulled UC within one at 12-11 with 4:21 remaining.  Cumberlands added layups from Lakin Burke and LeeAnna McNulty before Kassie Monday drained a three-pointer making it 18-16 with 2:38 left.  Kassie Monday connected with Destiny Haworth for a jumper and added a pair from the charity stripe to give the Patriots a 22-21 edge.

Both teams struggled from the field in the second quarter trading a free throw a piece over the first five minutes of play.  The Tigers went on a 13-2 run, over a four-minute span, before Kassie Monday found Kylie Fultz on the block for a layup cutting the deficit to 39-31 at half.

The teams traded baskets to open the third quarter until a Burke layup sparked a 5-0 Patriot run cutting the deficit to 46-40 midway through the half.  Kaylie Monday notched a pair of steals and three points as part of that run.  Cumberlands closed out the quarter with a jumper from Victory Fredricks as Georgetown extended their lead to 55-46.

Kaylie Monday drained a three-pointer in the corner at the 6:47 mark in the fourth quarter to pull UC within eight.  The Patriots continued to chip away at the lead as Kassie Monday and Burke combined for five straight Cumberlands points making it 60-54 with 4:48 left.  After the two teams traded baskets, Kassie Monday hit a three-pointer before finding Lewis for a three on the next possession to even the score 65-65 with 1:34 remaining. Georgetown hit five from the charity stripe down the stretch for the 72-67 final.

Cumberlands will travel to Lebanon, TN on Thursday to face the Cumberland Phoenix.  Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m.
