Columbus, GA – Cumberlands concluded the NFCA Leadoff Classic with a single game against Jessup University (CA). The Pats recorded four runs on six hits paired with five strikeouts from the pitching staff. UC now sits at an overall record of 7-3.
Morgan Radford was named to the NFCA All-Tournament Team after a stellar performance on the mound and at the plate. On the mound, she made three separate appearances and only allowed one run over nine innings. She maintained a 0.78 ERA on the weekend while collecting four strikeouts, one win, and one save. At the plate, she batted .500 on the weekend, going 7-14 with five RBIs. She notched a .500 on-base percentage and a .714 slugging percentage to lead the Pats through the weekend.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Pats had a slow start, seeing the Warriors record three runs in the top of the first to take an early lead. However, it did not last long as the bottom of the second was sparked by an
Amber Atkins laser to short and a
Bailey Turnbow walk. An
Emily Bryant single loaded the bases, followed by a clutch double to right center from
Morgan Radford to put UC on the board, 2-3.
Morgan Radford continued the rally with a fielder's choice play that brought Bryant home to tie the game. With runners on the corner,
Morgan Radford drew a throw on a steal to second, allowing
Shelby Radford to score and send the Pats ahead 4-3.
In the third inning, the Pats worked together on defense to keep the Warriors at bay. Heading into the bottom of the third,
Jade Gainer started things off with a single up the middle then swiped second. An Atkins walk put two runners on followed by a deep fly ball from
Bailey Turnbow to move
Jade Gainer to third, but UC was unable to capitalize with runners in scoring position.
The Warriors continued to be aggressive and were able to tack on three more runs for a 4-6 lead through the top of the sixth inning. Cumberlands continued to be aggressive at the plate by putting the ball in play but were unable to find any gaps. In the sixth inning, the Warriors elevated their lead to 4-7 for the final time. However, the Pats were unable to work from behind and fall short, 4-7.
LEADERS
Shelby Radford led the way offensively, going 1-3 at the plate with two RBI's while
Morgan Radford was 1-3 with one RBI. Bryant, Atkins,
Jade Gainer, and
Amber Gainer each tallied a hit apiece.
Pitcher
Kaitlyn Schofield tossed four innings and recorded three strikeouts before
Lindsey Shope came in for relief, tossing three innings and recording two strikeouts.
Cumberlands will return home to the UC Softball Complex to host the Ice-Burg Classic which is set to start on Friday, February 23
rd. The Pats will face the University of Rio Grande at 4:00 p.m. and Taylor University at 6:30 p.m.
