Williamsburg, KY – A late rally proved to fall just short as the Cumberlands men's tennis team dropped a close contest to #21 Union 4-3 on Tuesday.
UC's
Martin Muller and
Hung Ju Wu opened the day with a decisive win in doubles. The duo earned a 6-1 win over Diego Bsereni and Daniel Caballeros at #1 doubles. The Bulldogs took the final two matches to secure the doubles point and take an early 1-0 advantage.
Union jumped ahead 2-0 after taking the first singles match.
Hung Ju Wu captured the first singles match of the day for UC, to cut Union lead to 2-1. Wu defeated Harry Jordan 6-3, 6-3 at #3 singles.
Union picked up a win at #1 singles to take a 3-1 lead.
The Patriots did not back down as they won the next two matches to tie the score at 3.
Pierluigi Cruypenninck defeated Kacper Gorecki 6-2, 6-3 at #4 singles to gain momentum for the Pats and cut the Bulldog lead to 3-2.
Juanchi Alcon followed that up with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Victor Bourguignon at #6 singles to make things even at 3 apiece.
The final match between UC's Luis Marco and Union's Joao Cardoso at #5 singles would decide who emerged victorious.
After falling in the first match, Luis Marco battled back in the second match to earn a solid 6-2 victory to force a final set. Down 5-2 in set three, Marcos kept fighting and won the next two points, cutting the deficit to 5-4. The freshman ultimately fell in the tightly contested set 6-4 and the Bulldogs took the overall victory 4-3.
The Patriots are back in action on February 23
rd, as they host Austin Peay.
