Williamsburg, KY –The Cumberlands men's tennis team had a strong showing on Friday, leading to a solid 6-1 victory over NCAA D1 opponent, Austin Peay.
After dropping the first match at #2 doubles, UC responded with back-to-back wins to secure the doubles point and take an early 1-0 advantage.
Martin Muller and
Hung Ju Wu earned the first victory at #1 doubles, defeating Sota Minami and Aeneas Schaub 6-3.
Liam Savio and
Gabriele Solda followed that up with a 6-4 victory over Javier Tortajada and Bodi van Galen at #3 doubles.
Savio continued his winning his ways, solidifying the first victory in singles for the Pats. The senior defeated Bodi van Galen in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 at #6 singles to put the Pats up 2-0.
Cumberlands increased the lead to 3-0, as
Hung Ju Wu picked up a win over Javier Tortajada 6-4, 6-2 at #4 singles.
Juanchi Alcon earned the fourth point of the day for UC to secure the overall victory. Alcon defeated Glen Arnet 6-4, 7-5 at #5 singles.
With the win secured, the Pats continued to battle, earning a pair of three-set victories.
Killian Surmont opened play at #2 singles with a solid 6-1 win in the first set. After falling in the second set, the sophomore earned a 6-4 victory in set three to make the score 5-0.
Pierluigi Cruypenninck earned the final win of the day, emerging victorious at #3 singles. The senior defeated 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 to cement the 6-1 victory for the Patriots.
UC is back in action on Saturday, February 24
th, as they host Milligan at the UC Tennis Complex.
