Williamsburg, KY – On Day Two of the Ice-Burg Classic, the Patriots blew by the Racers of UNOH in a 10-2 run-rule victory. Cumberlands recorded 10 runs on eight hits while UC's pitching staff recorded seven strikeouts over five innings. The Patriots sit at an overall record of 10-3 on the season.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
In the top of the first, UC's
Morgan Radford recorded the start and went a quick three-up, three-down inning to send the Pats to the plate. In the bottom half of the inning, back-to-back leadoff walks for
Carly Oliver and
Amber Gainer set runners in scoring position. A
Makenzie Keatts laser up the middle pushes both runs across for an early 2-0 Patriot lead. Keatts capitalized on defensive errors and a wild pitch to move her to third, where a sacrifice fly from
Amber Atkins elevated UC's score to 3-0 at the end of the first inning.
The Racers quickly worked on offense with a pair of singles to put themselves on the board, 3-1. The Pats defensive efforts quickly shut down the threat to send them back on offense but were unable to add to their lead. The top of the third saw a leadoff walk for the Racers and a double down the left field line to raise their score to 3-2, still in favor of UC. Pitcher
Talli Burgess came on in relief, and a crucial strikeout ends the Racers threat.
Back on offense and at the top of the order, a leadoff line drive from Oliver combined with an
Amber Gainer triple down the left field line moved the Pats up 4-2. The momentum carries with a
Jade Gainer rip to right center for a 5-2 lead, forcing the Racers to make a pitching change. Even with the change, the Patriots continued to drill the Racers seeing an RBI-single from Keatts. Cumberlands closes out the bottom of the third with a 6-2 lead over the Racers.
Going into the top of the fourth,
Talli Burgess and UC's defense recorded a quick one-two-three inning The bottom of the fourth saw a leadoff walk from
Morgan Radford and a line drive to right field from Oliver. With runners on first and second, a disciplined at bat from
Amber Gainer leads her to a walk and loads the bases. A clutch single through the 5-6 hole from
Jade Gainer pushes another run across and keeps the bases loaded. With Keatts at the plate, she drove a ball through the 5-6 hole to send two runs across and elevate the Pats to a 9-2 lead and forcing another pitching change. Atkins reached on a fielder's choice to score the Patriots final run of the day, 10-2.
UC went back on defense, looking for three quick outs to close the game in a run-rule victory. A groundout and two clutch strikeouts from Burgess ended the game, seeing Cumberlands secure a 10-2 victory over the Racers.
LEADERS
Leading the way offensively, Keatts was perfect at the plate going 3-3 with five RBIs and one run. Oliver was also perfect at the plate, going 2-2 with three runs and one walk.
Jade Gainer was 2-3 with two RBIs and two runs while
Amber Gainer was 1-1 with one RBI, three runs, and two walks.
Morgan Radford recorded the win after tossing two innings and recording three strikeouts while Burgess came in relief and tossed two innings and recorded four strikeouts.
UC will compete in Third and Final Day of the Ice-Burg Classic with two games on Sunday, February 25
th, against the University of Northwestern Ohio, 1:00 p.m., and the University of Rio Grande, 3:00 p.m.
