No.8 Patriots Drop Road Game to No. 6 Tennessee Wesleyan, 9-4

Athens, TN – The No. 8 Patriots traveled to Athens, Tennessee to play sixth-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan. Cumberlands fell 9-4 to the Bulldogs, on Tuesday afternoon at Athens Insurance Stadium. Patriot hitters totaled five hits on the day, with three home runs and two walks. The pitching staff combined for 14 strikeouts and nine hits allowed.

Dustin Sprong had the start on the mound and pitched for one inning, taking credit for the loss after giving up seven runs on four hits. In the bottom of the second frame, Kailen Hamson took over for 2.2 innings and recorded six strikeouts and one run on two hits. Cooper Morgan entered, after Chipper Korbacher went for 0.2. Morgan notched three strikeouts and one run off one hit, in 1.2 innings. Jared Shelton came into the game for the next 1.2, throwing two strikeouts, two hits, and allowing no runs. Right-handed pitcher Zach Carlson was responsible for the final outing.

Sophomore, Caden Petrey, finished 2-for-3 at the plate, with a home run and a single. First baseman, Max Harper, went 1-for-3 with one home run and one issued walk. Johnboy Rittenhouse marked one home run, finishing 1-for-4.

The Bulldogs took an early 4-0 lead, by taking a grand slam over the left field fence in the bottom of the first.

At the bottom of the second frame, Tennessee Wesleyan tacked on three runs off two hits, to lead 7-0.

Adding one more in the bottom of four, the Bulldogs extended their lead to 8-0, after scoring on a wild pitch.

The Patriots put one run on the board in the top of the sixth inning, with a solo homer from Caden Petrey, but still trailed 8-1.

In the bottom of the same frame, TWU plated their final run, taking the score to 9-1.

Cumberlands added two more runs in the top of seven, 9-3. Max Harper was issued a walk, and followed by Johnboy Rittenhouse, who launched a home run to center, for two RBIs.

UC recorded one more run on a shot to left field by Max Harper, for final score of 9-4.

The #8 Patriots will host Fisher for two days of twin bills, with the first games on Saturday March 2nd, at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at Doyle Buhl Stadium.
