Montreat, NC – The fourth-ranked Patriots men's lacrosse team hit the road for the first time this season and had an offensive explosion earning the 25-4 win over Montreat Tuesday night. With the win, UC improves to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in AAC play.
Five Cumberlands players set new career high's for points in the game with five Patriots netting at least four goals in the win.
Will Rogers led the way with a career-high six assists, which tied the program record for assist in a game, and ten points, which is the second most in program history.
Dom Lulow notched a career-high five goals and nine points, while
Maalek Wilson chipped in five goals as
Evan Barton tallied a career-high four goals.
Johnathon Vanover dished out a career-high three assists as
Nick Kava finished with six points in the game.
Lulow scooped six ground balls to lead the way for the Pats, as
Ben Martin notched five ground balls. Wilson and
Michael Toohey finished with four ground balls apiece, while
Taylor Long and
Tate Crowell each finished with a trio of caused turnovers. Toohey earned the wins between the pipes and teamed with
JD Cook and
Nathan Foskey to make four saves in the game.
Michael Adams won the opening faceoff of the game and netted his first goal of the season six seconds in to give UC the 1-0 lead. Wilson and Lulow followed with goals in a two-minute span to extend the lead to 3-0, four minutes into the game. Toohey made a save, before Wilson added two more goals to give UC the 5-0 advantage. Cumberlands won the next two faceoffs and turned them into goals as they took the 7-0 lead after the first quarter.
The two teams traded goals before the Patriots netted three goals in a two-minute span to make it 11-1 with 3:00 left in the first half. In the closing seconds of the quarter, Toohey scooped a ground ball to spark a transition that yielded Lulow connecting with Rogers for a goal as UC took a 12-1 edge into the break.
The third quarter saw Cumberlands outscore the Caveliers 7-2 in the period, as Lulow connected with the back of the cage three times.
Will Rogers dished out a trio of assists with Barton and Kava each scoring twice to make it 19-3. UC continued to control the possession throughout the fourth quarter going on a 4-1 run to make it 23-4 with 6:27 remaining.
Zachary Swann tied his career-high with two goals that came 1:36 apart for the 25-4 final.
In the game, Cumberlands outshot Montreat 61-13, scooped 59 ground balls and went a perfect 21-21 on clears.
The Patriots return home Saturday, March 2, when they host Lawrence Tech. The game is slated to begin at 3 p.m. with live video available
