Campbellsville, KY – The 8
th ranked Patriots dominated on the road Thursday night as they defeated Campbellsville University 104-69. UC moves to 20-2 on the season and 6-1 in Mid-South Conference play. Cumberlands knocked down a season-high 14 threes shooting 51.9% from deep. They outrebounded the Tigers 38-24 and finished with five double-digit scorers.
Robertas Jonaitis had his best game of the year, scoring a career-high 22 points while also leading the team in rebounds with 9.
J.J. Ramey also had a career night scoring 20 points, 16 in the second-half, which put the senior over the 1000-point mark in his collegiate career.
Matthew Cromer was lights out from three as he went 5-5 from behind the arc for 15 points.
Jonathan Brown and
Harry Morrice contributed 11 points. Morrice added 7 rebounds while Brown finished his night with five assists.
Jonaitis started the scoring tonight with an easy lay in off an offensive rebound. Cromer nailed his first three the next trip down the floor followed by another layup from Jonaitis. Brown got out in transition and finished with a slam the next offensive possession to put UC up 9-4 early. CU added a couple baskets of their won before
Tajahri Cave found Ramey for another Patriot dunk. UC's lead grew to eight behind a triple from Cromer, and buckets from Cave, Ramey, and Morrice. The Tigers answered back with three points of their own before
DJ Jones knocked down a triple to put the Pats back up 24-16 with 10:28 to play in the half.
Campbellsville battled to within five before Jonaitis and Brown combined for the next 16 Patriot points as UC's lead opened up to 15. The stretch was highlighted by a steal that led to a huge dunk from Brown. Cromer's third three of the contest came with just under three minutes left in the half to stretch the lead to 44-26. Jonaitis was responsible for the remainder of UC's points in the first half as they took a 50-32 lead into the locker room.
The second period started with a bang as a lob play from Jones to Ramey worked to perfection to start the scoring. He added two more baskets in the next two minutes along with another Jonaitis bucket in the paint. Cave got in on the scoring as well before Cromer hit his fourth triple of the game to grow the lead to 24. The Patriots continued to let it fly from deep as Ramey and Cromer added one more each accompanied with back-to-back makes out of
Anthony Johnson. Morrice added four points in straight possessions prior to a lob from Brown to Johnson which saw UC's lead increase to 39. Morrice knocked down a three pointer of his own to give UC their biggest lead of the night at 94-54 with 7:10 remaining
Barek Williams and
Tanner Walton got in on the fun, hitting threes of their own as Cumberlands hit the century mark with two and a half minutes to play. Jonaitis scored his 22
nd point of the night with a minute remaining before Walton grabbed an offensive board and laid it back in for UC's final points of the night. The final buzzer sounded with Cumberlands taking the win over Campbellsville 104-69.
The Patriots will return home for a massive game against the 6
th ranked Freed Hardeman Lions on Saturday afternoon. Gametime is set for 3 PM ET in the O. Wayne Rollins Center.
