Williamsburg, KY – The third ranked Patriots women's lacrosse team netted six goals in the second and fourth quarter to pull away from tenth-ranked Indiana Tech 17-13 Sunday afternoon at the UC Lacrosse Complex. Cumberlands improves to 7-0 on the season, while sophomore
Emma Rittman set a program record scooping 18 draw controls in the win.
Rittman's 18 draw controls are a career high and surpasses the previous record of 16 set by Emily Heim and Samantha Tuller. The sophomore also added five goals and three ground balls.
Anna Lobbezoo chipped in six points, while
Marisa Helsten and
Aleyah Belton notched three goals and an assist each.
Koral Hadac and
Peyton Koenig scooped four ground balls apiece, while
Hannah Yates and
Mia Bosah combined for eight saves.
Rittman won the open draw and on that possession
Morgan Terpstra connected with Rittman cutting towards the cage for a goal 30 seconds in. After an Indiana Tech goal, Terpstra notched an unassisted goal, before Lobbezoo added her first goal 25 seconds later to make it 3-1. The Warriors evened the score at 3-3 as both defense force multiple turnovers of the closing minutes of the first quarter.
Yates opened the second quarter with a save, while Rittman scored twice to put UC in front 5-3. Lobbezoo won the next draw control as Belton found Helsten across the middle for a goal a minute later. After the two teams traded goals, Lobbezoo tallied a goal and an assist as Cumberlands took a 9-5 advantage at the break.
Indiana Tech scored twice to open the third quarter, however, Rittman won the draw and connected with Helsten for a goal 12 seconds later to give UC the 10-7 lead. The Warriors scored three of the next four goals, including a pair of man-up goals to pull within one 11-10 heading into the fourth quarter.
UC responded with four unanswered goals in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter to give the Patriots a 15-10 edge. Belton started the scoring and on the next play
Madison Rupp forced a turnover and on the transition
Ashlee Baker found Helsten for a goal. The two teams traded goals before
Morgan Tate made a strong pass to Belton for a goal for the 17-13 final.
In the game, Cumberlands accumulated 26 draw controls and outshot Indiana Tech 38-28.
The Patriots return to the field Tuesday, March 12, when they host seventh-ranked Missouri Baptist. The game is set for a 7 p.m. start time.
