Barbourville, KY – The eighth-ranked Patriots took a 14-3 (20-4)
, run-rule victory over Union (10-12), on Tuesday afternoon at Jerry Carey Stadium. UC batters compiled 14 runs on 13 hits and the pitching staff notched eight strikeouts.
Wesley Culley improves to 2-0 on the season, after taking a designated start and throwing for one complete inning. He faced five batters and marked one strikeout and two allowed hits.
Dustin Sprong entered as the next pitcher, throwing one inning with one strikeout and one hit. Making his second appearance of the season,
Willis McCarter threw the third inning, allowing a run off two hits. The next pitcher,
Darian Fumero, entered in relief in the bottom of the fourth, with one strikeout and one run allowed.
Logan Wombles threw for two innings, collecting five strikeouts and a run off two hits. The close,
Jake Kmiecik, held the Bulldogs to no runs and just one hit.
At the plate,
Evan St. Claire finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Right fielder,
Trent Prokes, batted 3-for-4 with a double, one RBI, and plated one run. Going 3-for-5,
Ben Snapp hit a double, earned two RBIs, and scored one run.
Caden Petrey went 1-for-4 and knocked out a grand slam in the top of the fourth.
The Pats took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
Christian Thompson led off with a single and advanced to second on an error by the Bulldog's pitcher.
Evan St. Claire brought him home with an RBI single.
In the top of the third frame, UC scored four runs on four hits to lead 5-0.
Trent Prokes started things off with a single and was followed by Thompson, who was walked. Both the base runners advanced on a passed ball and were brought across the plate on a homer from Charlie Muñiz. St. Claire was issued a walk in the next at-bat and scored off a
Johnboy Rittenhouse RBI single.
Union put up one run in the bottom of three, trailing 5-1.
To lead 10-1, Cumberlands tacked on five runs in the top of the fourth. Muñiz was walked and substituted for pinch runner
Jay Flynn, who went home on a double by St. Claire. The next two batters,
Max Harper and Rittenhouse were issued walks. Plating four runs,
Caden Petrey, notched an exciting grand slam, the fourth of his career.
The Bulldogs added to their score with unearned run in the bottom of the fourth inning, 10-2.
In the bottom of five, Union took their final run of the game on a solo home run, 10-3.
Cumberlands scored two, extending their lead to 12-3, in the top of the sixth.
Ben Snapp laid a double down and went home on a single by
Alec Gonzalez.
Trent Prokes followed with a double and sent Gonzalez across the plate, in the top of the sixth frame.
The run-rule was secured in the top of the seventh inning, for a final score of 14-3. The catcher,
Clay Shelton, was hit by a pitch and substituted for pinch runner, Flynn, and St. Claire took a walk. In the next at-bat,
Jose Valentin reached on a fielder's choice and advanced Flynn to third. On a single hit by Snapp, two base runners scored.
