Williamsburg, KY – The fifth-ranked Patriots men's lacrosse team utilized a 14-goal run, that spanned all four quarters to defeat Point 15-2 Saturday afternoon at the UC lacrosse Complex. The win moves Cumberlands to 10-1 on the season, including a 5-1 mark in AAC play.
Will Rogers led the way with five goals and six points, while
Maalek Wilson added four goals.
Chrystian Coleman netted a pair of goals to go along with six ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Ty Grooms won six faceoffs and scooped four ground balls as
Gabe Schwaiger finished with a game-high five caused turnovers.
Michael Toohey,
Nathan Foskey, and
JD Cook combined for 11 saves in the win.
It was a defensive battle in the early going as the Patriots, before
Will Rogers converted an unassisted goal to make it 1-0. Point tied the game before
Michael Toohey added a save to keep the game tied. The score remained that way until the 5:19 mark when
Maalek Wilson put a well-placed shot into the cage to put UC back in front.
Carter Barrett and
Noah Brandt each added a goal to extend the lead to 4-1 after the first quarter.
The Patriots extended their lead two minutes into the second quarter as Rogers connected with Wilson for the goal to make it 5-1. The Skyhawks looked to cut into the lead, however, Toohey was there for the save and on the transition,
Chrystian Coleman connected with the back of the cage making it 6-1. On the next three UC possession, Wilson added a pair of goals and picking up an assist to Rogers to give Cumberlands the 9-1 lead at half.
Cumberlands opened the third quarter with a pair of caused turnovers and a save before the Patriots added back-to-back goals from
Gabe Schwaiger and Rogers to make it an 11-1 advantage. Rogers added his fourth goal of the afternoon, while UC forced ten turnovers in the quarter to take a 12-1 lead into the fourth quarter.
Nathan Foskey recorded a pair of saves in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter to keep the score 12-1.
JD Cook added a save before
Dennis Smith found
Chandler Muth for a goal to make it 13-1. Coleman netted his second goal of the game, while
Zachary Swann earned an assist for the 15-2 final.
The Patriots return to the field on Saturday, March 30, when they host #3 Webber International.
